Error message
-
When I google my name I used to land on the Welcome page of my site – leatriceasher.wordpress.com Now I get this message at my wordpress site:
Not Found
Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here.I can then click on headings and get around but why this message now and how do I get rid of it as it may deter people from reading further?
Thanks

Is your blog private? What are your privacy settings (from Dashboard–>Privacy)? Did you change your front page to a static page?
It sounds like you’ve made the blog private and then it won’t find it.

I just checked my settings and they all say “published” not “private. How would the pages get changed to a static page? Where would I go to check this?
-
I only see one post on that blog. You do understand the difference between a Post and a Page, yes? That’s in the FAQ.
I googled your blog name and got straight to your blog with no issues whatsoever.
-
I meant Page (Headings). When I google my name I come to the website but still the error message is the first thing seen and there is no Welcome on that page. If I then click on the Home heading I can go to the Welcome Page but I rather not have surfers seeing the error message right off the bat and I don’t know how to fix it.
-
No, when I googled leatriceasher I got straight to the front page of the blog with WELCOME and no error message whatsoever. We’re looking at two very different things.
Try clearing your cache and cookies and doing a forced reload.
(also, when posting your blog URL, don’t forget the prefix. It makes it MUCH easier for those who want to help)
-
This is indeed strange! I just did what you suggested but still get the error page when googling. Sorry about not posting the full URL. Thanks for the suggestion.
-
This is the URL that is coming up when I google:
http://leatriceasher.wordpress.com/2007/09/15/pain-part-ii/
and the “not found” etc. wording on the page
-
Okay, more on this I just had a third party (actually 2 third parties) google my name and they both got the same thing I am seeing – the error message “Not Found, etc…..” Please advise
-
I clicked both of the links you provided and found your blog without any problem. Have you reloaded your browser and cleared your cache and cookies like raincoaster advised you to? http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/09/06/force-refresh/
The Cookie Dance
step 1. log out
step 2. clear your browser cookie
step 3. clear your browser cache/temporary internet files
step 4. close your browser
step 5. go back and test -
As I stated, I did follow all of raincoaster’s suggestions. What I am referring to is a “not found, doesn’t exist message” I get when I google my name. Prior to today, I was sent directly to the Welcome page of my site. In spite of this message, I can still get around my site but I do not want those googling my name to think the site doesn’t exist because of this message.
-
I am not experiencing error messages. This is the result of googling site:leatriceasher.wordpress.com
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&channel=s&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=site%3Aleatriceasher.wordpress.com&btnG=Search&meta= -
I am just googling my name, which is an easy thing to give people to find the site. This has worked since the inception of my site in September taking people to the Welcome page. Today it no longer works and I (and others) get an error message that the page is not found.
-
This is what I get when googling your name http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&channel=s&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=leatrice+asher&btnG=Search&meta=
I’m confused. I don’t get error messages. In what way do you think this has anything whatsoever to do with wordpress.com? -
Right! And when you click on the first entry you will see the error message. This is what I am questioning. Why is this appearing … and now?
-
-
Using the first link I posted above and clicking the first entry I do not get error message. I end up here http://leatriceasher.wordpress.com/articles-2/
Using the second search link I posted and clicking on the forst entry I do not get an errror message I end up here http://leatriceasher.wordpress.com/2007/09/15/pain-part-ii/
-
Well, then I am completely in the dark. I, and others, get the error message – on the wordpress site.
-
I’m sorry I can’t help you. I’m mystified. Perhaps another blogger will step in with an idea as to why this is happening for you but not for us.
