Error Message 500

  Hello,
  I received an internal server error message 500. I was told by the company that hosts my page, that it was not their error it was a Word Press issue. They told me to rename the htaccess file. What is this file for? What does this error message mean and how can I prevent it in the future? I don’t know how to write code, should I be using word press? I feel a bit overwhelmed, this is definitely outside of my expertise. Please help!!!
