Error message–can't save changes

  • Unknown's avatar

When I try to update a page, I’m frequently getting “Are you sure you want to do this? Please try again.” When I try again the same thing happens and I ultimately lose all my work. Solution, please!

    Hi there,

Could I get some more information from you?

When you saying you are getting this error, what changes specifically are you trying to make, and what are you clicking to save them? Are you trying to save pages or posts? Are they new posts/pages or only updates?

Also, what is the exact error message which you are receiving?

Thank you very much for the additional information!

  • Unknown's avatar

All I’m doing is adding a few lines of text (that include embedded links) to a page. Then I click update. These are pages, not posts. They are only updates, not new. The exact error message is “Are you sure you want to do this? Please try again.”

  • Unknown's avatar

    Heya,

That may actually be exactly the issue! There are only a few embeds which we allow. If you review this help article:

    Add Code to Your Site

You can see the kinds of code which are allowed and a few code tags which are specifically not allowed and which will be removed or blocked if you try to add them.

Are any of these what you were trying to insert?

  • Unknown's avatar

No I was simply embedding links to a page on another site. I have embedded links to that same site w/o problem a bunch of times, but about 1 time out of 10 I get the error message tho I’ve done nothing different

  • Unknown's avatar

Could you send over the links that you were trying to embed and the page which you were trying to edit? I’d like to see if it’s giving me the same error when I update your page!

    Thank you much!

This problem is sporadic–by retrying, I’ve eventually managed to embed all links and I could no longer tell you which gave me an error. At any rate, how could you update my page?? Wouldn’t you need access to my account to do that??

    Hi there,

As a member of Staff at WordPress.com, we are able to access the Dashboard of your site so that we can assist with any issues which you might be having.

I’m thrilled to hear that your site is working now however! Let me know if you run in to any other issues!

Now I’m having another persistent problem: Some posts keep reverting to drafts. No matter how many times I click publish and update, they revert to draft status. They say Published when I click Publish…but then they’re not live on the site and when I return to the list of posts in dashboard, I see that they’re again listed as drafts. Any suggestions?

P.S. I am using the greyzed theme at wordpress.com; no plugins added (I can’t add plugins, as I understand it, anyway).

    Hi there,

I just went and checked your site and I don’t see any drafts of posts. There have been reports that if folks have made posts and then use their browsers'”back” buttons, behavior like this has been seen. Posts have appeared to still be in draft form and if you go in and re-edit them and republish then it will overwrite the published version which you have previously published.

You may want to check the revision history for any of your posts if you feel like you’re missing content, there may be some sitting in there in a previous saved version that you can check!

  • Unknown's avatar

Through repeated tries, I had managed to publish all my posts before you went in and took a look. But please take a look now. There’s one listed as a draft that I’ve tried several times to publish. In case this is a clue: I’m trying to publish it with a 1978 posting date, but when I click Preview, it shows up with today’s date, even though the 1978 date is specified. Any help would be much appreciated because these are recurring problems…

    Heya Jeff,

Thanks for saving that example for me. I’ve taken a look at it and recreated it on a test blog (which is completely locked down to the public) and was not able to replicate any troubles myself. I didn’t want to try to publish it on your blog without your explicit permission. May I try publishing that article to see if I can replicate the problems?

    Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, please, by all means try to publish it. Note that I’m generally able to publish posts but then when I check back, they revert to draft status. After a few tries, the publishing ultimately “sticks.” And then there’s the date issue I mentioned in my last message…

    Thanks for your help.

    Hey Jeff,

You probably got an email a little while ago, but I went ahead and published that Rod Stewart article. It went right through the very first time and I didn’t write back immediately because I wanted to give it some time to potentially revert back to draft form, but I’ve not seen it do so yet.

At this point I’m not sure what could be causing the behavior which you’re seeing. You may want to consider trying a different browser or a different machine all together to see if the same behavior repeats itself, just to try and narrow down where the problem is coming from.

OK, I’ll try Firefox and see if I the problem goes away. Will get back to you if it persists and/or I uncover any more clues. Thanks for your help.

    Hi Jeff,

    Just a followup question:

Did you happen to work on any of those posts which kept reverting to draft form on the iOS app? I ask because the previous version of the iOS app would occasionally do something similar, where it would revert previously-published posts to drafts in some cases (though usually not so quickly). If so, you can update to the most recent version of the WordPress app and it will resolve the issue!

  • Unknown's avatar

No. I do have the iOS app (latest version, I think) but I have not used it to make any changes to the site whatsoever.
I did try Firefox a little while ago and had the same problem. I repeated clicked Publish and Update and would see in the backend that the item had been published; then I’d look at the site and not see the item; and then I’d go back in to the list of posts and see it was listed as draft again.
What finally seemed to work (tonight at least) was changing status from Draft to Pending Review, clicking update, and then clicking publish, rather than just trying to go from Draft to Publish (though that has often worked in the past).
    Very frustrating!

Still having the problem on both browsers and I really need to get to the bottom of this. Please look at the post that’s now marked draft. I click publish and see an indication that it’s published, but then I look in archives and it’s not there. I return to the posts list…and it’s back to draft.

Also: You’ll see that this entry is marked with a 1977 date but 1) it doesn’t show up in the archives there; 2) it appears to be here with today’s date:
    http://byjeffburger.com/1977/12/07/the-animals-before-we-were-so-rudely-interrupted-1977/
And 3) despite that, it is not listed in the archives under today’s date.
If you’re able to properly post this item (and please feel free to try), please send me the steps you followed so I can see whether I can duplicate them.
Do you think the fault could be the theme? I understand that half a million people use it, so that seems unlikely and I’d hate to lose it, as it does pretty much everything I want.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Jeff,

My peers and I are still not sure of what might be causing this issue for you, so we have asked some of our developers to take a look at it. They are looking in to it and as soon as I have any additional information I will let you know!
