Error message – "Can't select database"

I created the blog as per instructions – tested on my Mac.
Configured the Server for MySQL and created a Database.
Uploaded by ftp to my server.
Now I can’t access it.First I don’t really know what address I should be putting in the address bar – but if I put /wordpress/wp-admin/admin.php after the usual domain name, I get the “Can’t select database” message, which goes on to say that I may not have permission to use that database or that on some servers, I should add the username before the database name. If I use the long database name, (with or without username) I keep getting “404 Not Found”
Despairingly hoping someone can help.

Should have mentioned that the error message states that the username and password are OK.
