Error Message in Page Editor: ‘The editor has encountered an unexpected error.’

  • Unknown's avatar

I am receiving the following error any time I try to edit a page on my site. My post editor is working fine… this only shows up on pages. ‘The editor has encountered an unexpected error.’ The three options beside the message are, ‘Attempt Recovery,’ ‘Copy Post Text,’ or ‘Copy Error.’ Nothing happens when I click on any of those.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Howdy –

Please let me know if you’re working from the browser or the WordPresss app.

If it’s an app, try reinstalling it to see if it fixes the error.

If it’s through a web browser, let me know which type and version number. Check for updates. Try a different browser to see if the behavior continues there.

    Thanks :)

Thank you. Btw, this is in WP-admin not wordpress.com. Using Safari 13.0.1 and have cleared all cache and tried again – get the same error message

  • Ah, thanks for that. These forums are actually regarding just the free sites using our managed hosting service. We also answer questions about Calypso and our other services.

Did you mean to ask over at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ instead? Those are the forums for self-managed sites through other hosting providers.

Will do… thank you. I was a bit confused on the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org as I use both orgs for different functionalities.

  • No worries, with such similar names I know it can be confusing.

    This will help:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Basically WordPress.com is a service, and WordPress.org is free software — much like the difference between a restaurant and a recipe if you’re an analogy person like me. I hope that helps!

Alright, sorry, but I’m still a bit confused! I tried to log in to wordpress.org and it says that my credentials are invalid – I don’t think I’ve ever logged in there. I can log in to wp-admin using my wordpress.com credentials or via BlueHost. I don’t use a .org account on any of my sites.

Aaaand…now it’s working just fine. very strange. :-) Well, thanks anyway!

  • To post in the WordPress.org forums you’ll need to create a WordPress.org username account first.

That is a completely separate website from WordPress.com, and your WordPress.com account credentials won’t work there, nor will your site’s unique admin credentials that were sent to you by Bluehost when you installed WordPress on their servers.

A WordPress.org account is used exclusively for posting in the WordPress.org forums and contributing to that software at make.wordpress.org. You don’t need a WordPress.org account to use the software for your site.
