Error message whenever I publish a blog post

I have taken over managing my organization’s blog from a previous administrator.
Whenever I publish a blog post, the post displays with this error message:

Warning: count(): Parameter must be an array or an object that implements Countable in /nfs/c01/h02/mnt/44065/domains/[website name]/html/site/wp-includes/post-template.php on line 284

I saw something about needing to update to the latest version of wordpress to fix this issue, but I don’t understand how this works. Do I need to download wordpress software and link it to my computer? Do I need to contact the previous administrator to ask them to update their wordpress software?

    Jetpack: Yes
