Error upon importing from WordPress 2.1

    I did: Exported an XML file from my website europeanparty.com. Attempted to import it to my new site europeanparty.wordpress.com.

    I saw: An error: Please upload a valid WXR (WordPress eXtended RSS) export file.

    I expected: the import function to import my XML file.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Version 2.1 is really, really old. I expect that there will have to be a couple of interim imports and conversions done to get it into the 3.1 version that is running here.

    Contact staff directly and I’m sure they can help with the conversion.

    @european:
    Or you should not export-import first, but upgrade europeanparty.com to wp 3.1 version. After all that is done, then you export it into XML form and import it to your blog in wp.com.
    But as @thesacredpadpath say true, because I’m not sure if my suggestion could solve your problem or not.

    @duto, your suggestion would certainly work, and if they still have that blog up and running that is certainly a possibility. It might require that they do the upgrades in several steps. They would have to check over at http://wordpress.ORG/ and look around a little to see what would be required.

    AND @europeanparty, if you go that route, make sure and completely back up the database before you start the incremental upgrade process and then back it up after each step so that you do not lose anything.

    The database has had several changes from 2.1 to the present and requires several incremental steps. There are some guidance at .ORG but that is relevant only if you still have the old site up and running – if you don’ t still have your site up or don’t feel comfortable doing several upgrades then your best bet is to contact the staff here for help.
