error when updating the primary domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I mapped my new domain. Then I updated my name servers to point to WordPress.com. Then I went to update the domain to the custom domain from the default wordpress.com domain and I get this error:

There was an error when updating the primary domain.

    Screen shot:

Now I am stuck and I can’t do anything in the My Domains page. It won’t let me get back to this screen where I can update the domain. The button is grayed out and the table headers are there but no data is showing. I think there is a bug in the system. Can someone please check on this for me?

    Hi there,

Could you explain what your goal is? I’m not entirely sure from your explanation. Are you trying to map a domain hosted elsewhere to your WordPress.com site?

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

My goal is to map an existing domain. I followed the steps in the article and I get the error that I described (see screen shot). We changed the name servers yesterday and it looks like it’s pointed there today. I am getting forwarded to http://faeds.wordpress.com when I go to http://faeds.org. That is not what I wanted. I wanted to use the custom domain name. Thanks!

    Hi there!

You’ve almost finished your mapping. One more step must be taken in order for your custom domain name to represent your WordPress.com site.

    Click below:
    https://faeds.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

You must make faeds.org your primary domain, rather than faeds.wordpress.com.

That should do the trick! If I can help in any other way, please drop me a line. Cheers :)

Ok, thanks for that link. Apparently the link in the documentation is wrong since it points to https://wordpress.com/my-domains/ instead. This is where I got the error I mentioned in my first post.

The new page you sent allowed me to change the primary domain to the custom domain name. However, when I did that, the old site started showing again instead of forwarding to the new WP.com site. I thought that meant something was wrong with the DNS records, so I went to check on that and it showed that no DNS records existed. It was completely blank even though it gave me a confirmation of importing the custom MX records after mapping the custom domain name. Looks like another bug? Anyway, I added in the 2 custom MX records. However, I am not sure what A records to enter to get it to point at the new WP.com site. Can you help with this? It seems the documentation for this is incomplete. Thanks.

    Hi there.

If you are trying to point faeds.org to faeds.wordpress.com, it’s working great. If you’re trying to point your domain to another WordPress.com site, let me know which one.

When you map a outside domain to a WordPress.com site, all you need to do is add the domain mapping upgrade to your WordPress.com site, and change the name servers with your domain’s host to:

    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

No other records are necessary for the mapping.

You mentioned MX records. I assume this means you have an existing email address that you’re trying to set up here. Do you still need help with this?

Thanks for the information about the support docs. We’re in the midst of changing our dashboard, so I’m afraid you may still dealing with non-updated information. This will be changed as soon as possible, and I’m sorry for any inconvenience it caused you.

I am not sure how you missed it but, I mentioned that my goal is to get the WordPress.com site to come up for my custom domain: faeds.org.
I also mentioned my first post that I mapped the domain and changed the name servers.

I went back into the custom DNS editor and found that it had changed from blank to having all the wordpress.com DNS settings added. After that it started working. I don’t know if you did that or if you had someone else to it but that seemed to fix the issue. So, thanks to whoever did that.

I was unaware you were changing dashboards. That makes sense since the light blue dashboard looks different and has bugs. The old dashboard worked after you sent me the link to it. Maybe the new dashboard is not ready to roll out yet?

I added my MX records and will be testing them today. I will let you know if I need help with that.

    Hi again,

I’m glad things are working well now. I felt I needed to clarify your request, as things got muddy.

I made sure your name servers were saved correctly.

You can use the new Dashboard or the classic version. Whatever suits your preference.

Your domain page in the new version:
    https://wordpress.com/my-domains

Your domain page in the classic version:
    https://faeds.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

Let me know about those MX settings. Please note it can take 72-hours for any changes to your MX records to take effect.

    Thanks.
