Escutcheon theme – Can I disable sidebars?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello! I’m using the Escutcheon theme, which looks great for my blog archive (home page), but looks less good for all my offshoot pages like /services/ and /about/ because there is a vacant sidebar (no widgets) to the left of my content, shoving all my content to the right.

Is there any way to disable the empty sidebar on this theme?

An example page with text forced right: https://chelseacounsell.com/services/

Thanks for any help that you can give.

Hi there, First of all, lovely site!

I enabled Escutcheon on my test site and I don’t see that it has a full-width page template like some other Classic themes. It also doesn’t appear that leaving the sidebar empty recovers the space, so maybe think about putting that space to use? An “About Me”, a subscription form, Archives, Pages? Have a look at the demo site’s pages for inspiration https://wordpress.com/theme/escutcheon

Also, I did notice one thing you might want to consider changing. Your site’s front page already lists your blog posts and each title there is linked to the corresponding blog post. This makes your “Blog” page listed in the top navigation a bit redundant.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Thank you! I will attempt what you’ve suggested–that’s a good idea to try and use the space for something. A bit more modular than I wanted, but I like the rest of the theme. I’m also willing to take suggestions on other themes that look like Escutcheon (i.e. have blog-forward layout), but do have a full-width page template. Thanks again!

Hello again, If you look in the WordPress.com Theme Showcase, you can find a selection of themes that support a full width page template. The “classic” themes (i.e. not using the Site Editor) tend to be lower on the showcase page.

I’m not sure I understood what you meant by blog forward, but you can choose to display your blog posts on the front/home page of your site by changing the setting in Settings>Reading. Most themes have the ability to only show an excerpt, as opposed to the full post), but you’d need to experiment with that.

If you don’t want to experiment on your live site, it’s always worthwhile creating a free test site. However, if you want certain features, like the ability to edit CSS or use Styles on your test site, you’d need to upgrade to either the annual Explorer plan or the CSS Add-on. Both of those have a 14-day refund window.

Hope that helps get you started.
