Espied theme, portfolio vs. posts publicize

I have 2 questions really:
– Why is publicize only available for blog posts and not portfolios
– With the Espied theme, how do you make your blog posts appear on the static front page (as their demo shows) or does it have to be portfolios.
The 2 questions are related somehow as it seems I have to choose between the sleek espied design or the publicize tool…
Thanks for your help.

• Why is publicize only available for blog posts and not portfolios

Portfolio projects are similar to pages in that they fall outside of the blog structure. Unlike posts, which are updated regularly, projects and pages contain static content which doesn’t change often. Projects and pages also do not have an RSS feed as a result, and don’t make use of Publicize. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

With the Espied theme, how do you make your blog posts appear on the static front page (as their demo shows) or does it have to be portfolios.

The Espied demo only shows projects on the front page, not posts. This is how the portfolio page template works. However, you can get it to display posts through a little trickery (I tested this on Sketch but it should work for Espied as well), but it’s a little complicated. It also won’t show a preview/extract of the post content, but only the featured image.

To have a post display on the portfolio page, view the post in your browser and copy the URL from the address bar. Next, go to your dashboard and create a new project under Portfolio -> Add New. In the title field (you don’t need to add any content to the project), add the following, substituting the post URL and post title where indicated:

Post Title

Before you publish the project, make sure to also assign a featured image that will appear as the thumbnail on the portfolio page. For Espied the featured image should be at least 480 pixels wide: https://wordpress.com/themes/espied/

When you publish, the image and title will appear on the portfolio page, but if people click on the title they’ll be taken to the post instead. This will not automatically update if you publish new posts, so you’ll have to do this manually each time you want a new/different post to display there.

You’ll need to create a separate portfolio project for each post you want to appear. In each case, assign a featured image, and put the link to the post in the title using the html I supplied above.

When you no longer want a post to appear, either delete the portfolio project linking to it, or replace the featured image and link with that of another post.

Thanks for that very detailed answer :)

So what I think i’ll do actually is double my posts. I’ll do my daily post as a post (and use publicize) and double said post as a portfolio so that all posts can be viewed as portfolios on welcome page of blog.

• It’s your blog, so you can do pretty much whatever you want with it, but I would advise against doing that. Creating duplicate content like that can completely mess up your search rankings. You also cannot comment on portfolio projects, so people are going to click on the project, read it, and then won’t be able to comment. And I can guarantee you most people won’t want to go to the post if they’ve already been at the project, simply for the sake of commenting.

If you don’t want to use portfolio projects, why not rather pick a theme that showcases posts instead of projects? There are many themes that display posts in a grid format similar to the portfolio page. I don’t know of a specific listing, so you’ll have to browse the theme gallery to find one, but in the long run that will be much simpler than what you’re proposing here.

But as I said, it’s your blog, so you decide what you want to do.
