Etsy/Craft Tutorial

  • Unknown's avatar

What if I saw an idea on Etsy, went ahead and created the item myself, and did a post tutorial on how to create that item, still referencing and linking back to their original photo in their shop saying where I got the idea. Is that okay? Please let me know if you need more clarification.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Do you mean you ripped off an idea from an original artist and you want to create a how-to on creating the item? You’d probably be subject to a copyright claim by the original artist, and it’s not exactly within broadly accepted moral guidelines, so you’ll come in for a huge amount of hate. If you have an Etsy account, I do not doubt it would be suspended.

Why don’t you simply ask permission?

I agree with raincoaster. In the post, you mention that you got the idea from a certain place. This implies that something inspired you to create something new and sufficiently different, while you essentially just copied the entire post but substituted you own materials. I’m not sure if a court case could really be held against you, but I could definitely see the DIY community lashing back at your lack of originality.

A Blogger site did that to me – their first try was cut and paste my entire Post – I filed a take down & it went away for a while – then they made their own pictures exactly like mine and changed the first paragraph to make it harder to search for it – the second time Blogger took the whole Post off and it stayed off – but since it is on Blogger the rest of their copied stuff stayed up – not as forgiving here – I really wanted to take the whole site down

I take down ten or so of these kinds of sites every month. If it’s well-intentioned, like Banksy’s stencil project which released stencils to the public, great. But if you do it without the approval of the artist then the original artist can get your website entirely deleted without even having to go to a lawyer.

Enjoy. Read the comments too, because I added some stuff.

One site took the whole Post – and put their name down as the author – the second one took the whole Post but put a token link back to my site –

looking at Google search results it looks like Google has downgraded those two sites – but still a bad deal and theft is theft

Get them taken offline; they are hurting your search engine ranking. If you don’t get the sites deleted, search engines think you’re part of a network.

    Thanks for the heads up

I am new to blogging so I am definitely innocently asking these probing questions so as not to cross any lines. But i definitely want bring up a few things though…I guess I am still foggy on the definite answer, because in no way whatsoever am I trying to pass any of those ideas off as mine, nor would I be selling them. I would always be linking to the original location, which is where I saw the idea. I don’t understand why I wouldn’t be allowed to see something and create it myself? Why I wouldn’t be allowed to tell people who I made something I saw somewhere (again, linking to the person’s blog or etsy or wherever). I certainly am not trying to be argumentative, but I just don’t understand where the line is drawn, because then in theory you could say that you can’t make anything off of pinterest that you see because it was something elses idea..i wouldn’t even take credit, so it doesn’t make sense to me why people have blogs linking around if not to give people ideas. It’s more “let me show you my experience creating this item i saw on ‘this’ site”…In thinking about things I’ve made that I saw browsing on etsy, they are again not things i’m selling, just being crafty, things i wanted to make. It just seems very foggy to me. all of it. I never want to step on anyones toes, i guess i’m having a hard time seeing where the line is drawn.
Thanks for all your input and help, i really appreciate it!

modlook- any chance you can remove my url from my first post? I am completely new to wordpress and didn’t realize it posted to the public. I read up on the rules now though, and I know alterations are not normally made, but just hoping to catch a break while I look into this issue and continue researching forums and articles. I want to ensure I use my blog within the scope of it’s terms and am refraining from posting on it til I’ve found a definitive answer on where lines are drawn and how to respect people’s ideas and creativity.
    Thank you.
