Every New Page Named "Untitled"

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m sure this is incredibly simple and I’m missing something obvious but I cannot find anywhere how to name/rename my site pages in the Manage menu. I’ve Googled this every possible way and searched the forums as well. I have a home page named “Home” but every time I create another page it and publish it, it says “(no title) has been published” and the page in the My Site tab is named Untitled. I can’t find any option in the page creation page or on the Site Pages menu to rename them to something other than Untitled. I haven’t launched my website yet – could this have something to do with it?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

To rename your pages go to My Sites > Site Pages . From there you can either click the title of the page (in your case it would say Untitled) or click the the 3 dots at the end of the page and click Edit. Then put the title you want where it says Add Title. And make sure to save/update the page.

If it doesn’t work immediately wait a few minutes and see if the changes have taken effect.

Clicking the name takes me to the editing page screen and there is no option there to change the page name. When I click on the three dots my options are Edit, View Page, Stats, Copy, and Trash. Clicking Edit also takes me to the editing page screen. Nothing I click on the Site Pages screen allows me to edit the name of the page from the Site Pages menu screen.

You have to click the “Add title” (or “Title” if you’re still using the Classic Editor) when you’re inside the page edit screen. When you click it the text cursor should appear and you just directly type, just like how you would edit a text box. From what I could find, you cannot edit the page name from the Site Page list and have to edit each page title from the individual page edit options.

If for some reason that clicking on those is disabled for you I can tag this for a staff help.

Where is the “Add title” option? Do you mean I should add a header block?

  • Unknown's avatar

It would look something like this which is also found on this support page at https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/

You should see something like that and that’s where it says Add Title you would click that and start typing to change your page title.

My screen looks like that minus the “Add title” field. When I pull up a blank page I only see the “Start writing” field. For the record, I am publishing pages and not blog posts.

Publishing pages and publishing post are somewhat identical so I used that as an example.

I’m not sure why you’re not seeing the Add Title field, and I am unsure if it’s because you’re site hasn’t been launched or if its something else.
I would see if publishing your site fixes the issues, you can set it to private if you’re still setting up. You can also try clearing your cache and/or closing all WordPress windows or tabs and and then try again to see if any of that changes what you see.

I tried publishing my website, clearing my cache on the computer I was using, and then switching to a different computer and it’s still not showing up for new pages or new blog posts.

  • Hi there,

I have no idea what’s going on here – I’ve confirmed the title option is missing on both the post and the page editor on your site, but it shouldn’t be – there doesn’t even exist a setting to hide those.

So most likely this is a glitch that somehow occurred on your site only. That happens sometimes, and often they can be fixed by just changing something on the site, so please try these steps:

First, go to My Site ->Themes and try switching to another theme. Then switch back to Business Professional that you have at the moment.

If that doesn’t help, create a new post or page. Top right in the editor you’ll see three dots. Click those, and select the Switch To Classic Editor option in the menu that appears.

Exit the editor, then create another new post or page, and then use the prompt in the sidebar to reactivate the block editor.

Let me know if neither of these methods have any effect.

Neither of those options worked, unfortunately. I tried a different theme as well, which said that the title could be edited from the Customize menu in the theme itself, but I couldn’t find a title section there either.

  • I couldn’t find a title section there either.

Typically it is found by clicking Customize – Site Identity.

I checked there and my only options were Logo, Site Icon, and Footer Credit.

  • Thanks for checking. I know this is frustrating.

Do you see the same options across different browsers? Or is it isolated to a specific browser?

Try signing out and back in to the account as well.

We will keep working on this until it’s sorted.

The browser I’ve been using is Chrome. Just tried IE and Firefox and IE loaded up but just showed an empty white page in the page editor and didn’t produce any changes in the Customize page. Firefox showed the loading screen with the flashing fields indefinitely for the page editor and when I tried to load the Customize page it failed and showed “Sorry, the customizing tools did not load correctly.” I tried again and the same thing happened. Signing out and back in didn’t change anything.

I’m confused more than frustrated, but mostly I really appreciate everyone stepping in to help!

  • Thanks for checking those. I just wanted to rule out a browser specific issues. Which I think we have done.

We’re going to continue working on this and have asked some other team mates for ideas as to what could be happening.

Someone will report back here with an update.

  • I tried a different theme as well

Can you please tell me which theme you tried?

It looks like your site is part of a testing group for a new feature where you can control your site’s entire design from within the editor, but in only works for the Home page at this time. This test is only being run on some sites using one of our * Business themes, so you should be able to get access to all regular features if you switch to any other theme.

Or if you want to stay with Professional Business, I can ask a developer to remove your site from the testing group, which will restore all regular features. Please confirm if you want us to do that.

I tried another business theme initially, but when I tried a non-business theme just now it worked! I was able to switch to the other theme, change my page names, and switch back with the names intact. I don’t mind using this workaround for now, but I look forward to when the new feature is complete.

Thank you everyone for your help; I’m marking this as resolved!

  • Fabulous, thank you!
