Everyone in the firm can see commenters details

It is certainly handy that after you’ve made on comment on a wordpress.com blog, your name, website and email details are pre-completed next time you comment. I was, however, a bit startled to discover today that this must be based on IP addresses rather than cookies and can be caught up by a proxy. One of my colleagues at work posted a comment on my blog and entered his home email address. Now whenever anyone in the firm visits my blog, the comments section is pre-completed with the original person’s details including his email address! I can only assume that this is happening because we are all behind a proxy and so wordpress.com thinks we are all using the same machine.

It’s your blog. Which I assume you’re the only administrator. So only you can see this information. If you left a comment on my blog, only I can see that information.

Just clicking your name here, it goes to Twitter. I don’t know what the policy is there. But no one other than the administrator can see the information you mentioned at a WordPress blog.

So if it is cookie-based, does anyone have any theories as to why everyone sees the same details? It’s worth noting that it only happens with IE. I use Firefox but when I opened my own blog in IE (without being logged in), the comment form was pre-completed with the details of the guy who sits next to me. Note, he’s never used my PC! Other people using IE to go to my blog also see his details in the comment form.

That’s odd and strange. And you’re not even logged in yet. I just checked my blog on IE7 and the comments didn’t show any email information or anything personal. Do you work for the government and they have some funky computers? What kind of computers do you have at work and which version of IE so staff can possibly investigate. Maybe ask your employer.

It would be easier if we could get a link to the post in question and then we could confirm whether this is limited to computers on the same LAN.
