“…exceeded the login limit…” error message when logging in to WordPress

Hello. First let me preface my issue by saying that I’ve been blogging with WordPress since March 2022 and what I am about to describe has never ever happened before.

On Thursday July 6 around 9:00am EST I could not log into my WordPress account on my desktop computer. After entering my username, I got an error message that said “you have exceeded the login limit. Please wait a few minutes and try again.” (My last log in was Wednesday July 5 sometime between 8:00pm – 10:00 pm so I’m not sure why this happened.)

I waited a few minutes, cleared cache, cleared cookies, closed browser, re-opened browser, etc…. and I still got the error message.

I even tried the logging in with google option and that didn’t work either. I also tried the “email me a login link” and that did not work either.

Thankfully, around 11:00am EST on Thursday July 6, I was able to log into my account with no error messages. And I was able to log in and log out of my WordPress account throughout the day with no problems. I also had no issues logging in and out on Friday, July 7.

Unfortunately, I had the same problem attempting my first log in of the morning Saturday July 8 at 9:40 am EST. “You have exceeded the login limit. Please wait a few minutes and try again.” This happened at 9:35am EST. My first log in attempt for the Saturday July 8. My last log in was probably sometime between 8pm – 10:30pm on Friday, July 7.

About an hour later on Saturday July 8, I was able to make my first login for the day.

I don’t understand why I’m getting the error message at the log in screen. I don’t know if someone is literally trying to access/hack my WordPress account by repeatedly trying to guess my password at the login screen or if this is just someone kind of temporary glitch with the WordPress login.

I would greatly appreciate any insight a WordPress staff member or Happiness Engineer can provide regarding the log in problems I’ve been having.

I did send an email to help@wordpress.com (and a couple of follow-ups) but haven’t received a personal response yet. (And that’s okay as it seems the help@wordpress.com email support is more for folks with paying accounts rather than a free account like I have.) However, if you’d like to read my original email or see the screen images I attached to my first email message, my support request was tagged #6505899 in the subject line from the autoreply

Hi. I’m just checking in to see if any WordPress staff has had a chance to review my post above. I haven’t had any log in issues since Saturday, July 8. But I’m concerned that it may happen again and, if it does, I will not be able to post in the forums about my problem.
