Excerpt Doesn’t Work
-
Are we allowed to use the optional excerpt option if our blog is hosted ON wordpress.com as opposed to being hosted on our own domain?
I’m trying to use the excerpt function but it’s not working. I’m temporarily using the MORE to break it up. If I take away the MORE and only have something in the excerpt field, the whole post shows up on the Home page. If I leave the MORE and put something in the excerpt field, then only the MORE works.
Please help. Thanks.

Will I get to use the excerpt option if I host it on my own domain with the wordpress platform?

The excerpt field is for feeds – whatever you put into that field is what will show up on your feed. I know it works that way if your feeds are set not to show the whole post. I don’t know what shows up if the full post is fed.

The excerpt field is for feeds only? I thought the excerpt fields allows you to show a unique blurb (different from anything on your post). Whereas the more allows you to show part of your post.
Either way, I’m trying to use the excerpt field to show a unique few sentences and then they can click on a link to view the actual article.
Can someone help? Thanks.

This is from the Codex and, as such, some only applies to the version of wordpress used with self-hosted blogs (editing, panels, etc.) but this should clarify things for you:
