  What exactly are excerpts and where are they good for?

  The excerpt produces an effect similar to the more tag, but instead of the beginning of the post you can have a custom-made summary of it.

  If you’re talking about excerpts that show on your blogs front page by adding the “read more” tag to the post, then I have found that to be very helpful in reducing page loading times, especially if the post contains lots of video or pictures.
  If you’re talking about the excerpt section when editing a post, then thats a summary of your blog post that will appear in feeds or search engines. I tried this once and I didn’t see the excerpt appear but I guess it would be helpful, I just have little experience using it so I really dont know.
