Does anyone know of an excerpt plugin that will allow me to write a custom excerpt that appears on the first page instead of a truncated excerpt of the first few lines of the post? Anyone having good luck with a plugin for the current version of WP?

Sorry but that is not a WordPress.COM hosted blog and we do not provide support for any blogs that are not hosted by WordPress.COM.WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support forums. http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the Theme support forums there.

On both WordPress.com and self-hosted sites, most themes will display your manual/custom excerpt as long as you’ve add one to the post:
If you don’t see the box for adding a manual excerpt below the post, click the Screen Options tab at the top right and make sure it’s checked it off.
If you are looking for a plugin to do something special, the best place to ask for help is indeed the WordPress.org forums, as timethief mentioned above. Good luck!
