Excerpts in Categories
-
I want to show a full post on the home page, then excerpts in the categories. How can I do this? I’ve found loads of information on how to do this for wordpress.org users, who host their own blog and can manipulate code, but what about for wordpress.COM users. Maybe I can change the code in wordpress.com. If so, how do I go about doing this? I’m on the Caroline theme. I have added the excerpts, but I cannot get it to show up in the categories. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, it’s me again. I cannot help but feel like I’m not clicking something. That there must be a button unclicked or a box unticked to get the exerpts in categories to work.
-
You mean an option somewhere? No. You add content to the Excerpt module of the post editor screen, then click Update Post. But excerpts work in some themes only (and Coraline was one of them). Documentation here:

I have the same problem and asked about it here:

I, too, an using Coraline and wish to have excerpts in the links from categories. I tried editing one post to add an excerpt in the box under the write post box, but that post still shows as the full post when the category is selected.

Yes. I’ve tried various things as well, and I simply cannot get the excerpts to show up at all. I have now gone back in and put in a ‘read more’ splitter, but that makes it so that even the front page is split. I want the front page to be a full post, and the categories to be excerpts.
Perhaps, as panaghiotisadam suggested, Caroline just isn’t working, and I should just let the staff know.

Perhaps? Perhaps you should check my theme surveys:

I thoroughly test each theme soon after it’s implemented, and I’ve listed Coraline as one of the themes that support excerpts on category pages. So WP has changed something – on purpose or not (Coraline was hurriedly put together because of a capricious and vindictive wish to eliminate Cutline, and then staff kept changing things to fix the mess they created). -
Yes, I had read the post on WordPress tips which listed excerpt function by theme, and noted Coraline was supposed to be one which gave excerpts in categories.
I have now, today, submitted a form to support.
-
I received a reply to my query to support and have been informed Coraline shows the full content on all category pages.
-
Yes, sad, it appears so. Not a sign that the rushed release of Coraline was well planned.
Isn’t there a theme which does show excerpts for cats and archs and the number of them is not limited to the number of posts set for the front page?
I’m too busy right this moment to search, but if there is such a theme, then Panos would know. Check his blog…

@swanscot: Thanks for reporting. Apparently it’s one of the changes they made to make the theme more similar to Cutline (at first Coraline displayed the post author, and they changed that after complaints by ex Cutline users; at first the default for Coraline was beginnings of posts on category pages, and they changed that too).
@Tess: that was Modularity Lite.
