Excerpts missing from Twenty Ten

  • Unknown's avatar

I just realized my excerpts are missing from this blog. There is no Excerpt editing box on existing or new posts. I have changed themes several times in setting this blog up, but I’m pretty sure Twenty Ten is supposed to allow excerpts. I did activate Typekit. Can that cause the excerpt editor to disappear or does Twenty Ten not support them?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I just looked at My Twenty Ten Theme on my site and the excerpt editing box was directly below the Edit Post box.

Have you tried logging out of WordPress, and clearing your cookies and browser cache? That sometimes fixes many odd issues.

Logged out, cleared cache & cookies. I even logged into my account from a different browser that I’ve never used for WP before. The Excerpt editing box is nowhere to be found. It’s not an option anywhere is it?

Could typekit have killed it somehow?

I just compared it to the Dashboard on my other blog (which is on WordPress.org instead of WordPress.com). A bunch of stuff is missing: Single Post Template, Excerpt, Trackbacks, Custom Fields.

    No idea what’s going on.

When you have a Post selected for editing, look at the options for the “Screen Options” tab (upper right corner) – there is a series of “Show on Screen” options, make sure Excerpt is selected.

Check the upper right corner for “screen options” then click.
Click to add a checkmark to the modules you are missing.

auxclass – you are a genius. ;) I was having this same issue (my excerpts box disappeared yesterday) and I would have NEVER figured it out. I’ve been searching for an answer for 10 minutes. You just earned a subscriber.

@mvbandboosters, do not compare a wordpress.COM blog theme with a wordpress.ORG blog theme. Even though they have the same name, they are different as you are seeing. There could be things missing from the themes here, or in some cases there might be things here that are not on a .ORG blog.

Single post template and customer fields are two such things. Excerpts and Trackbacks are supported here, but the display of them might be turned off. Check as auxclass suggests under screen options.

@twoweektrial – not a genius really – someone else had a similar problem and I saw the answer in the Forum, that reminded me of the tab and I double checked the answer and passed it on – glad I could help –

    you are welcome –

many questions show up in the Forum – I have learned a ton of things by just reading what others have done or how problems have been worked out.

    Good luck with your blog.

Yes! That did the trick, thanks! I do wonder how it got unchecked, though, since I’d never noticed that tab before. Is it possible some themes can have those options disabled by default? That would be a bit weird.

Yeah, I know WP.com and WP.org are different, but I figured the dashboards would be relatively similar. I just wanted to check if my Excerpts had disappeared from there, as well.

I think this is the first time anyone ever answered a question I posted on the forums! Thanks again!
