Excerpts not displaying

Why won’t excerpts display? I’m using pilcrow theme and I have the excerpt window open. I type the excerpt but nothing displays. I have “summaries” set in Settings and I’ve tried it without. I can’t get a summary to display either. Only full post. I can use the More tag but this is not what I want.

Not all themes support excerpts, and if they do, you will only see them on the front page of your site, not when you preview a post.
Summaries under Dashboard>Reading only affects your site’s feed and any emails notifications sent out to followers, not the site itself.

I’m not sure why you wouldn’t want to use the “More” tag here.
If you create your custom “excerpt” as the first paragraph/intro to your post and then follow it with the “More” tag, anyone clicking on the “continue reading” link on the front page of your site will be taken to the place in the post following where you inserted the “More” tag on your front page.

I tested my posts by publishing them and checking the front page after having written an excerpt. The excerpt window is present in my post editor so I thought that meant my theme supported it. I would like to have a brief description of the piece that is separate from the piece itself. Right now I’m using the ‘more’ tag until I can figure out the excerpt function.

If you need custom excerpts, you need a different theme. Custom excerpts don’t work when a theme displays full posts on the front page, they work when it already displays (auto) excerpts. Examples: Chateau (“concise” layout option), Inuit Types, Origin, Oxygen, Sight, Suburbia.
