Excessive "followers"?

    I am getting a lot of “followers”. More than should be interested in a college alumni newsletter. Most are from “hotmail”. Some from yahoo and gmail. Some of the names are obviously spammers or make no sense or all. I don’t understand why they would bother. For one thing, it would make wordpress send out a lot of extra email. Is there something I am missing?
