excluding categories altogether

Can I exclude categories altogether? I don’t want my posts to be categorized, not even under the “uncategorized” category. At least, I don’t want this information to be shown in my blog. Also I don’t want the “posted by” info to show. Can that be done?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Let’s start with this please. Every time you post to this forum you must provide the URL for the blog in question. You can either post the complete URL starting with http:// every time you post, or you can link your username to your blog.

It’s very easy to do. Here’s how to link your username to your blog in your blog Dashboard > Users > Your Profile. Then scroll down to where it says ‘Website‘ and fill in the address of your blog and then click ‘Update Profile‘.

That being said, if you do not wish to assugn Tags or Categories you do not have to. However, from the SEO (search engine optimization) point of view that’s not wise if you do wish to have targeted readers, who have an interest in the content you posts contain, find your blog. In essence, you would be playing hide and seek with search engines and potential readers using them. Therefore, if yours is not going to be a private blog, I do not recommend not using the keywords that relate to your blog in categories and tags on your posts.

Please don’t forget to post the link to the blog in question or to link it to your username when you reply to me. : )

Also note that “Uncategorized” is the default category. You can replace it with another category that you create, but you cannot eliminate it from the theme template as we cannot edit the templates on wordpress.com blogs.

    Hi, timethief,
The blog in question is http://drplausivel.wordpress.com

In your second answer you say the default category cannot be prevented from appearing. Does that happen only for free blogs or for both free blogs and premium? Thank you.

I think you misunderstand what “premium” is.
Is VIP hosting what you mean?

All free hosted bloggers purchase upgrades. However, there is no upgrade that can provide for hacking (editing) templates on a multiuser blogging platform. On a wpMU (multiuser) blogging platform like this one all bloggers using the same theme are sharing the same template. We cannot access or edit those templates at all – ever. If we could and you edited out the default category or replaced it with another one then what would happen is that all other members using the same theme would find their blogs edited likewise.

If you wish to hack a theme then you can do that by hiring a web host , downloading free wordpress.ORG software and going at it as that software is freestanding software for self hosting bloggers. I believe you will benefit from reading the sticky post at the head of this forum and also from reading this wordpress.com support documentation entry. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Thank you, timethief. You’ve saved me a lot of trouble. I just wish there were more options available at WordPress.com. Many blogging and commenting services have been moving towards restricting basic formatting options and filling blogs with paraphernalia not suited for quiet blogs like mine. I don’t want to be popular. I just want a place to laugh with my friends.

    Again, thank you.

Maybe what would suit you would be a Tumblr blog. They are very easy to use. There is no built in commenting system unless you choose to install one. There are no categories and it’s not a great site when it comes to SEO. Check out the features here http://www.tumblr.com/why-tumblr

Another alternative you could use without leaving wordpress.com is to change the visibility of your blog vis a vis search engine access. The Privacy Settings control what type of visitors can read your blog. See here for the three choices that can be made > http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
