Excluding posts from listings

Hi everyone. I am wondering if it is possible to exclude certain posts from the automatic listings of past posts. My blog will consist of a mixture of “serious” posts that I want to appear in the list of recent posts, or the index of archive posts created using the “display-posts” short-code, and other posts which will be just single photographs or picture galleries which I do not want to appear. I’m using the “Able” theme and the list of formats appearing in the New Post include “Standard”, “Aside” and “Image” (if this helps!). I have searched the support pages but can’t find anything relevant. Any ideas? Thanks, Sarah.

Forgot to say that changing the type of post (from standard to image for example) doesn’t appear to have any effect on the layout.

Sorry, I think maybe my query wasn’t very clear. I don’t want to remove a post from the archives, simply for its title not to appear in listings of posts. There will, for example, be a lot of posts consisting of just single photos, like the “Tropinota hirta” post you can see now on my blog. To have them all appear in the list of posts would make the list excessively long and make it hard to find the “serious” stuff. I seem to remember reading somewhere that “Aside” posts, which could be just a few lines of text without even a title, don’t appear in the listings, but can’t find the mention anymore.
And shouldn’t changing the type of post from “standard” to, for example “image” have some effect on the layout of the post as it appears in the blog (in my case, it doesn’t)? Thanks and sorry if I wasn’t clear the first time, Sarah. -
Why don’t you just backdate them by a couple of years? Then they won’t appear in Recent Posts at all.

But it still leaves open the fact that with my Able theme, I see no difference between standard, aside and image formats for new posts. Should I??? Thanks again, Sarah. -
… but of course, if I backdate the photos, they won’t show up on the page of latest posts on my blog either :-( . Don’t suppose there’s another way round the problem?

a) You can’t exclude a recent post from showing in the RP widget. To display selected recent posts you need to use a different widget, and you’ll have to update things manually each time you publish a new post. It can be a Text widget, a Links widget, or a Custom Menu widget. If you need more details on this, let me know.
b) To include only the “serious” posts in your Index page, you need to invent an appropriate category name, add this category to all those posts, and add this in the display-posts shortcode:
category="NAME"
Replace NAME with the actual name of the category. -
Sorry I didn’t reply sooner. Something strange happened and ione of my blog’s was suspended for a while yesterday… luckily all sorted!! I did a few experiments yesterday and it looks like I’ll be able to find the perfect answer combining your suggestions. Thanks until the next time, Sarah.
