Excluding staff from stats

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

How can I exclude internal traffic from our blog stats? A few staff have “editor” access. Do editor visits count towards stats?

Do I need to make all our staff contributors, or assign them some other role?

    Thanks,
    David

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You cannot do any excluding. Please read:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/

The following are not reflected in your stats:
Visits to uploaded documents and files
Visits from browsers that do not execute javascript or load images
GoogleBot and other search engine spiders
Visits you make to your own publicly available blog (when logged in to your account)
Visits by users that are logged in, and listed as admins on the blog

Note: Contributors to your blog do not have the ability to upload files or images, but they can see your site’s stats.

Thanks. I had read that. But it’s not as comprehensive as I hoped.
So I still have a couple of questions.
Are visits by editors counted in the site visit stats?
To exclude visits by staff in the stats, we would have to make them admins. Is that right?

    Thanks again,
    D

Visits by users who are logged in, and who are NOT listed as Admins on the blog are counted.

To exclude visits by staff in the stats, we would have to make them admins. Is that right?

Yes but more than one Admin is NOT recommended.

I don’t think the documentation is correct – I just checked on of my sites that I am an Editor on – and my page views were not recorded – as a double check for the delay of stats posting – I visited the same site with my smart phone and the page views were posted in less than a minute

It makes no sense to me to only have Admin’s excluded and not Editors and any other logged in user that would be on the site for admin and editing work –

I have flagged this for staff attention to double check my experience and review the documentation as required

@TT – I have been telling people for some time that logged in users don’t count – but that is not what the current documents state – so that is why I ask for the clarification

May we please get your feedback here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/admin-bar-in-forums-fubar?replies=5 Hopefully, Staff will take note of Volunteer feedback in that thread soon.

Thanks for your input. And yes, some clarification from WordPress would be helpful.

  • Confirmed: we don’t count visits for any logged-in member of a public site. So editors / authors / etc. can visit as much as they’d like (while logged in) without affecting stats. I’ve updated the support docs accordingly.

Just note that if the site is private, only members can visit, so we do count all of their visits.

Thanks. What do you mean by member? Contributor? Follower?

  • If you’ve added them to your site under Users, they’re a member of the site, so on a public site, their visits will not be counted.

If you have added Followers there, though, it’s because your site is private, and since everyone must be logged in to view a private site, all of those views are counted.
