Existing blog to wordpress.com: More traffic?
-
I currently host a couple of blogs using the wordpress.org code on shared hosting. I’m considering moving them to wordpress.com by importing the existing content, setting up a custom domain, and changing DNS.
I’m curious if other people who have done this have noticed a change in their traffic growth rate, # of comments, etc, after moving. I’m kind of hoping my blogs will benefit from being around more “foot traffic” by being part of the bustling wordpress.com blog community.
What have other people found?
(I apologize if I picked the wrong forum for this)

I sincerely believe that having your posts in the wordpress.com category/tagging system does increase traffic to blogs. I also believe that if you use the forum search box you will find a thread where this discussion has taken place previously. IMO the community here is very supportive.

For the past several days, my #2 referrer has been wordpress.com. If I had a blog elsewhere, that would not happen. And the tag system gives you serious google juice, there is no question in my mind. To put it in perspective: my independently-hosted blog is something like 350,000 on Technorati. My WordPress.com blog is around 15,000.

Actually, I have not had a lot of traffic referred to me from wordpress.com. On the other hand, wordpress.com has referred ME to lots of interesting blogs…
And, as raincoaster points out, the tag system (or some other aspect of being on the wordpress platform) seems to do wonders for google ratings. Many of my Norwegian language posts are consistently in the top 10 on the Norwegian version of google when you search for tag words or even words in post titles.

I feel my traffic went down when I moved due to an issue with my htaccess file from my old site but I seem to be getting better search engine listings (and probably a higher PR as well) now that I’m over here due to the tag system. (Sulz, if you read this, this is the main reason I was thinking about doing a multi WPMu tag system in case you’re still wondering) Heck, just blogged about it in fact.
