Existing domain

  Hi WordPress support team,

  I have an existing domain with a hosting company, when i registered onto wordpress it says I need to upgrade to a business account to add a premium theme and I have to pay yearly subscription. I’m not sure why I have to pay for a yearly subscription as I have a friend who built a few wordpress sites and linked existing domains without any payment on wordpress.

  Premium Themes are available with both the Premium and Business Plans:

  http://wordpress.com/plans

  But yes, regarding domains, you cannot register or map a domain individually with WordPress.com without a connected plan. Domain subscriptions can be purchased as a part of one of our many plans here. This was made as we continue to work diligently to provide the best WordPress.com experience for both users who choose to purchase a plan as well as those who choose the free plan.

  If your friend used a domain with WordPress.com without the need to have a plan, they must’ve connected that domain over 3 years ago, which was when we allowed domain registration and mapping without a plan.
