existing domains

I’m trying to move a non-profit’s domain name to word press since the current management of it is not particularly efficient. We already own the domain name. What happens when I add it to WordPress? Are we now paying twice? What happens to the existing web site? Does it’s publishing need to be cancelled first? Any help on this would be appreciated. Thank you.

    re: purchasing upgrades

WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/

We have different plans: free, personal, premium and business. All hosting is free regardless of which plan you choose. You can view all wordpress.com plan features here https://wordpress.com/pricing/ Add a plan for each of your sites here: http://store.wordpress.com/plans/.

    Details:
There are no monthly payment plans and no bulk deal upgrades. We are billed annually. Also note that purchase orders are not accepted. We must pay for all upgrades in full at the time of purchase.

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade.

Premium upgrades do not include any premium themes which are all individually priced one time upgrades. The Business upgrade includes access to all premium themes but also note that there is no e-commerce capability under any plan here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/small-business-website-1?replies=2#post-2804631.

Make sure you read the comparison very closely do you know exactly what the restrictions and limitations on WordPress.COM blogging are: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/

What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard and purchase upgrades at > Dashboard> Store > My Upgrades

Your billing history will be at Dashboard > Store > Billing History
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/billing-history/

Your only options for payment are found here Payment Methods http://en.support.wordpress.com/payment/

Refunds have lime limits. WordPress.com provides a 30-day refund on all upgrades except Domain Registrations, Domain Renewals, and Guided Transfers. The refund period for Domain Registrations and Renewals is 48 hours.

Note: It takes from 1 – 2 weeks for the refund to be received.

You have to be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard, cancel any upgrades, claim a refund for any qualified upgrades, and disable auto-renew. Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades. You can also disable auto-renew there. http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/#canceling-upgrades

I’m not sure I got my answer from your reply. How does my current domain get applied to WordPress? What happens to the current site? I’m just not sure how this works. Is there anyone at WordPress I can have a conversation with?

How does my current domain get applied to WordPress?

You have to add a plan and purchase an upgrade to map an existing domain. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

What happens to the current site?

You move the content into the WordPress.com site using this guide Moving from a Self-Hosted WordPress to WordPress.com https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

Is there anyone at WordPress I can have a conversation with?

I guess I need a class on the lingo first. I don’t know what a sidebar tag is and don’t see one on this. I simply have more questions than you are addressing and your explanations generate more questions. It would be helpful to talk with someone (I think) but I don’t know how. Sorry to be so dim. I’ve managed two web sites for a collective 36 years and always found it quite easy, so I don’t know what I’m missing here. I just need human support.

  • Hi donporth –

I’m happy to help sort this out for you.

There are 2 versions of WordPress. What we do here at WordPress.com is a bit different from the self hosted version of WordPress – https://wordpress.org/

I suggest looking over this information that outlines those differences:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you already own a domain, you can use it at WordPress.com via Domain Mapping. To do this, you’ll need to add WordPress.com Personal to your account.

Each year, you will renew your domain registration (not us) and also renew your
    mapping through us.

Once you update the name servers on the domain, it is going to show your WordPress.com version of the site in the browser.

Let me know if you have any follow up questions!

Thank you Liz. That makes a lot more sense. I still have a couple questions.

    1. It sounds like we would use the WordPress.com option. I believe the basic option is something in the neighborhood of $13 per year?
    2. When we go in and set up a page, can we do so before we activate it and it takes over for the existing site? We want it to be in good order prior to launching it.
    3. Is there a way for other members of our team to view it prior to publishing it to the web? Kind of a quality check thing to be sure it is as we want it.
    4. Is there a way to give more than one person access to it or do we simply share our one user name and password?

    Thank you.

  • No problem. To answer the follow up questions –

    1. It sounds like we would use the WordPress.com option. I believe the basic option is something in the neighborhood of $13 per year?

Yep. You can map your domain for $13 / year.

    2. When we go in and set up a page, can we do so before we activate it and it takes over for the existing site? We want it to be in good order prior to launching it.

I suggest building your site, the way you want it to go live, on your FREE .wordpress.com site. Then, once you map the custom domain to the FREE site, it will take over. Does that make sense? You will always see the free .wordpress.com site listed on your account along with the custom domain. Your viewers, however, are only going to see that custom domain. You can keep the FREE site marked private until you’re ready to show the world :)

    3. Is there a way for other members of our team to view it prior to publishing it to the web? Kind of a quality check thing to be sure it is as we want it.

We do not ever suggest sharing login details with anyone, even from the same team, family, etc… If you briefly undo the privacy settings, they will be able to see the site at the FREE url until the mapping is in place. How does that sound? During this time, the custom domain is not going to pointing to the FREE site yet, so they’d type in the_free_site.wordpress.com (this is an example).

    4. Is there a way to give more than one person access to it or do we simply share our one user name and password?

You can add other WordPress.com users to the site under various roles. Please read this information carefully: https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/
My advice is to only have 1 admin of the site. There is nothing off limits for this role and someone can easily delete the site (which can’t be restored by us). Do not give anyone else your password or share a login.

    Reply with any follow ups!

Outstanding. That answers all my questions. Thank you so much for taking a moment to clarify. I somewhat suspected it to be this way, but I wasn’t sure and didn’t want to do a bunch of stuff that would need fixing. Thanks so much. I’ll get going on it.

    Don

  • No problem, Don! Glad to help. Take care!
