I already have a site hosted somewhere else. Can I take a copy of what I already have and upload it to wordpress, or do I have to build it out by scratch again.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi kicit,

Where are you moving your site from? If you can export the site as an .xml file, you can import the site to wordpress via the import tool. You can find more information about this here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

    Hope this helps

    Hi kicit,

If you are moving from self-hosted WordPress.ORG to WordPress.COM, I recommend reviewing the documentation on https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/.

Hi, and thank you for your response.

The current site is hosted on a third party server. Everything is HTML and PHP. I can, and do, FTP to the site and copy down the entire site as a backup. None of it is .xml. I basically have the entire site on the hard drive of my PC, as well as a copy stored off-site.

I didn’t know if there was a way to FTP the copy I have to WordPress. All my current edits are done in notepad. I don’t have a utility or program I use to make updates to the site.

    Hi kicit,

There isn’t a way to FTP and upload self-hosted site into WordPress.COM. Unfortunately, the move is a little what you’re used to on the hosted site. You’ll have to create an export from your site and upload the file into your WordPress.com.

Please keep mind that if you are using commercial theme or plug-ins custom theme, you will need to upgrade to the business plan.

For custom work you could read about our VIP Services > https://vip.wordpress.com/

    I hope this was helpful.

    HI Pauline,

I will try the export and see how it works. There are no plug-ins or themes. I created all that myself. I have been doing HTML since the late 90’s. Yea, I’m old. The site needs an update but I am hoping to do that a little at a time, if I can get it imported. Otherwise, I will have to learn WordPress and do it over time, then switch over DNS when I get it completed.

    Hi Kicit,

The export carries over the media, content, pages, and posts. You will need to reconfigure the theme. Site design updates are super easy with the current WordPress.COM. Theme switches are a simple click of a button. I would recommend tinkering a little with the free plan. So far, I haven’t had the need to dig into the code.

As always, keep a backup of the site until you have WordPress.COM completely setup. Good luck!
