  we have a site with domain, what would be involved in transfering it to wordpress.com

  Hi –

  The domain has to be registered with the current provider for 60 days before it could qualify for a transfer. This is true each time you transfer a domain. The instructions are on this page for review:

  The other way to use the domain here is by pointing it to us through domain mapping. That practice is different from a transfer. There’s not a time limit in place for mapping.
