Expanding and contracting font sizes
-
Howdy!
A short while ago there was a change to the typography module in the block editor interface and since then I’ve been finding published posts on my site where font sizes have changed all by themselves:
Enlarged Text: Paragraph text in Cover Block https://wpcommaven.com/2013/01/25/looking-for-help/
(temp screenshot) (temp screenshot from the IA Wayback Machine showing when I published it)Shrunken Text: H3 headings on most of my recent posts have become tiny. Example: https://wpcommaven.com/2021/03/18/p2-anew/
(temp screenshot from site) (temp screenshot from the IA Wayback Machine showing when I published it)To allay the question, browser zoom is not involved here.
Is there any way to correct this besides going back and manually changing text sizes?
TIA

Very interesting, thanks for bringing this up Jen. :)
I’m suspecting changes to your theme may be at issue here as there appears to be some CSS changes between when those snapshots are taken on the Wayback Machine. It’s a little tricky though since I’m not sure I can trust the CSS I see in the saved copy on the IA.
Before we start investigating that, I’m curious is this an issue you have seen on other sites or themes as well? Of for now should we limit our investigation to your test site and the Dalston theme? Thanks for the additional info!
-
I only noticed it on my main site, so I can’t say where the issue lies, whether with changes to the theme, Dalston, or changes to the typography settings with an update. I can say that, in these two specific cases, it’s likely that after adding the text, whether P or H3, I adjusted their size and/or weight using the typography settings.
I’ll have a look-see on some of my other public sites to see if there are similar issues there and report back here if so.

Coming back to say that I’ve checked my other active and inactive sites and it seems that wpcommaven is the only site where I’ve regularly used subheadings and such, which makes sense given the nature of the content there.
My 2¢/Earlier theme demo sites included pages of Styles/HTML Elements
https://twentyseventeendemo.wordpress.com/styles/
https://dyad2demo.wordpress.com/html-elements/
https://twentyfifteendemo.wordpress.com/html-elements/
https://twentytwelvedemo.wordpress.com/html-elements/
https://hemingwayrewrittendemo.wordpress.com/html-elements/
https://illustratrdemo.wordpress.com/html-elements/
and other demo content which were very useful not only when shopping for a new theme, but also for troubleshooting. Such demo content is no longer included on newer demo sites, but it would be helpful to have it none-the-less.
/My 2¢Thanks again

Hi Jen,
Do you remember when exactly this happened? I’m trying to figure out if it’s caused by an update to the theme or to those blocks.
-
Hey Fotis, I don’t. I can only say that at the time of publication, the font sizes were as I intended them (and as displayed in the screenshots from the Wayback Machine). I noticed these changes only a few days ago.
It’s at best circumstantial that the editor’s typography interface changed, but if I inspect those specific H2 or P tags, there is a font-size notation listed that isn’t mentioned in other places.
As an example, on the enlarged text it says
<p class="has-text-align-left has-large-font-size">but on the H3<h3 class="has-normal-text-size">I mentioned above
I can say that, in these two specific cases, it’s likely that after adding the text, whether P or H3, I adjusted their size and/or weight using the typography settings.
Thanks again.

Thanks for the extra details, Jennifer.
It doesn’t look like the theme has had any changes since September, and we’re not seeing a specific Gutenberg change that explains this either, so it’s a bit of a mystery at the moment.
We’ve asked some developers to check if they can see something from their end. We’ll update here once we hear back.
-
Thank you. I’ll leave those specific posts alone in the meantime so they can look at them.
-
Hi folks, just posting back here to ask if the devs have what they need so I can go ahead and update those posts where I’ve found the odd text size changes? Thanks again.
-
Hi Jennifer,
We’re still waiting to hear from our developers. I’ve nudged them again, in case this perhaps slipped through a crack during the holidays :)
-
Please let me know when they have what they need, so I can go ahead and update those posts. Thanks.
-
Hi @justjennifer, thanks for your patience on this. I don’t have an update other than that it’s on their list.
Would you be willing to copy the posts as private posts, or let us save them to a test site?
-
OK-I’ve added them as Private posts on my site. However, it looks like there may have been some changes (text color, style) as a result of copying the posts. Don’t have the time to review each in depth right now.
