Expanding image width in Lovecraft theme

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

In the Lovecraft theme, I could previously expand the width of images on my site so that they aligned with the edges of text blocks.

Now, standalone images (i.e. those not being used in text wrap situations) sit smaller on the webpage. What can I do to expand the width of the images? I would greatly appreciate some inputs. Thanks.

Hello @chindits! I’ll be happy to help with this. After checking your site, I noticed that the width of the images is controlled by your theme’s default settings. However, if I understand correctly, you previously had the option to adjust the image widths, right? Would you mind sharing a screenshot of where you made these changes earlier, so I can take a closer look?

Also, since you’re on a paid plan, you have the option to contact us directly from your dashboard. You can follow this guide for more details:

Hi! Yes, until a few months ago, I could expand the width of the image by dragging the image handles to beyond 100% of the image block/placeholder size. This action ensured that the image aligned up to the edges of the text block when the post was published.

Unfortunately, I cannot currently show you an example of this because all the images on the website have reverted to meet the theme’s default image settings. Furthermore, I can no longer stretch the image to beyond the default image block size.

I suspect that one of two things has happened: the maker of the Lovercraft theme has modified the theme further to prevent this ability or my tinkering around with the site’s CSS a few months ago, broke something.

    Hello again, @chindits!

On your current theme, when you’re using a sidebar, it doesn’t respond to changes in image width made from the Image block. One option would be to disable sidebars on posts, which you can do by following this guide:

    https://wordpress.com/support/site-editor/add-a-sidebar/

Another option, if you’d like more flexibility in customizing your site, is to switch to a block theme. Block themes allow much more control over the layout and design. You can learn how to do that here:

Please let us know if you have any questions or need any extra help, and we’ll be happy to assist you.

Thank you @elcristofue. This is really useful to know. I will try removing the sidebar and see if that suits my purpose.

I was unaware of the nature of WordPress’ block themes that support full site editing. Good stuff! I will explore this option.

You’re very welcome, @chindits! Feel free to explore our block themes. You’ll notice that they give you much more flexibility when editing your site and open up many possibilities for customization.

If you need more help with this or have any other questions, don’t hesitate to reach out via email. We’ll be happy to continue helping you privately from there. 🙂
