It looks like your domain name renewed Dec 19, 2012 – did you also renew the domain mapping?

What is the status of your upgrades at: Dashboard >> Store >> My Upgrades?

I have also flagged this for the staff to take a look at your account

  • Hi there,

I will help you here – I removed your ticket (which hadn’t been handled yet) so that we don’t cross wires anywhere.

I can try to retrieve your domain for you, but it will cost you an additional $80, which is a fee imposed by the registrar. This is because your domain expired and is now in a period called redemption.

The total cost to renew your domain would be $106. (And I am referring to the domain lettersfromawhoremongerswife.com)

If you agree, I’d be happy to try to get this domain back for you.

You say you will ‘try’ to retrieve the domain name? $106 doesn’t guarantee? Do you work with WordPress?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, zandyring is Staff. No there is no such thing as a guarantee. When one allows a domain name to expire they no longer own the domain name. There is a brief redemption period and after that the registrar who owns the expired domain can do with it exactly as they wish.

By way of analogy suppose your purchase car on time payments. If you don’t make your car payments on time then after a brief redemption period the sheriff will come out and seize the car and return it to whoever you were attempting to purchase it from. If you want it back you pay impound fees so maybe that analogy will make your situation more understandable to you.

WordPress.com is charging only for domain mapping. The rest of that wad of money goes to the domain name registrar who now owns your domain because you did not renew by making your payment prior to expiry.

that’s why we get so many renew your domain notice prior to the expiry date.

If they can’t retrieve the domain name you will not be charged anything – only pay if success

So, can I go back to lettersfromawhoremongerswife.wordpress.com?

    lettersfromawhoremongerswife.wordpress.com

Yes but you will loose the traffic that would go to your old custom domain name – the traffic will go way down for a while –

  • I am just checking back in – Auxclass and Timethief have ably and correctly answered. I do work for Automattic, makers of WordPress. The $106 is charged for retrieval, but refunded if it is unsuccessful. I do want to be clear on that point.

How long before you will know if you’re able to retrieve the name?

  • I can check right now if you agree! I’ll know immediately. I can’t check until you agree to the fee, however.
