Expired domain – how to remove

  • Unknown's avatar

Could support please remove the expired domain melbournepatterns.org in order to allow
http://melbournepatterns.wordpress.com/ to be the only address to access our site.

I am getting expired domain black screens all over our content! Two problems with the wordpress instructions:

    1. The “Update Primary Domain” button on the “store/my domains page” seems to change the primary domain but the change reverts by itself after a few minutes.

    2. The wordpress instructions on that page “Please contact support if you wish to delete a registered domain” simply points me to the generic support wiki and not to a real support person.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Sure thing! I removed that expired domain upgrade, and you can now access that site at its free address here:

    https://melbournepatterns.wordpress.com/

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

    Hey – thanks!

Half my links on https://melbournepatterns.wordpress.com/past-presentations/ still point to the old expired domain and thus don’t work. I can’t see a way of fixing them? I tried editing and resaving a page but this makes no difference.

When you change the domain on your site, it doesn’t automatically change the links in your site’s posts and pages. You’ll need to update the links to your old domain on that page (and any other posts or pages with links to your old domain) so they use your site’s free address, instead.

In the editor, you can click on each link and then click the edit (pencil) icon that pops up to edit the link. Please let me know if you have any other questions about that!

Ah great thanks – have fixed it.

I though perhaps the links to the sub-pages were generated automatically due to the fact that the sub-pages had their ‘parent page’ set – but in fact the links to sub pages were being done explicitly as content on the parent page. Not sure what the point then is of having the parent/child relationship.

The parent/child relationship does a few things, although it doesn’t change the links or content on the page. When you have a parent/child relationship, the child page’s URL changes to show its relationship to the parent page. For example, you have a child page here:

    2011 Presentations

If it weren’t a child page of your “Past Presentations” page, it would be at this URL instead:

    https://melbournepatterns.wordpress.com/2011-presentations/

In themes that support navigation menus with sub-menus or dropdown menus, child pages will appear underneath their parent pages in the menu, as well. Some themes also have certain page templates that display child pages in a different way, although the Contempt theme you’re using doesn’t include those kinds of templates.

    Great explanation – thanks heaps.
