expired domain on another registrar, trying to transfer to wordpress
-
i registered a domain on another registrar, and mapped it to my wordpress blog, but then i realized i could just register it under wordpress, but instead of transferring it like i should have done after the 60 days grace period, i stupidly thought, ill just let it expire, and then register it under wordpress, but that’s not working exactly, and i still need to transfer the domain, and i still have the option to renew at my original registrar, but im wondering if wordpress accepts expired domain names, so then i can complete the transfer process without renewing at my original registrar
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I’m not sure about which domain registrar you’re using and how they deal with things, but I’m quite sure that if you let a domain expire you enter what is called the redemption period for your domain (read more about how this works on WordPress.com here). You can still purchase your domain back, but it’s more expensive, and you also risk losing it to other bidders. I think the safest route would be to renew it at your original registrar (even though it will cost you) and then map it to WordPress again. And make sure you go to your settings and set it to auto-renew so you don’t have to go through this again in the future.

Hi there,
Expired domains don’t become available immediately, but go through a process of about 90 days before they are released. As part of this process your registrar might try selling the domain privately at auction, and at a certain point it enters a phase called Redemption during which you need to pay an additional fee to get it back.
So it’s not about accepting an expired domain name. You simply won’t be able to register the domain anywhere until the domain is released again. And even if it is released, if someone has the domain on back-order somewhere, chances are they’ll register the domain before you’ve even realised that it has been released.
It’s also not possible to transfer a domain to WordPress.com, so if you have a domain registered somewhere else the safest course of action is to keep it registered there, and then map it here instead. If you still have an option to recover the domain at your original registrar, I advise you do that as soon as possible, before the domain enters into Redemption.

oh no, you guys are right… wordpress doesnt accept domain transfers :(
thats the saddest thing i have heard all day, iam now stuck having to renew at my current registrar and map for all of eternity, silly me, tricks are for kids, and i actually cancelled my mapping bc i thought it would help me transfer the domain name, but actually, it did nothing, i guess… i learned somethinghttps://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-can-i-register-an-expired-domain-name?replies=5

ok, i now understand your profound advice kokkieh, i thought this through some more, and i could potentially get the domain under wordpress if after the redemption period passes or the 90 days release process, and no one is lurking in the wings waiting to pounce, ie, does not have it backordered, and no one is biddin at some crazy auction that ive never heard of, I TOO CAN have my domain at wordpress, but of course, the safest route is to continue mappin, but its not like anyone reads my blog or i have any brand capital, again, lesson learned, i should have done my research from the get go, instead of make haphazard decisions that lead me to nowhere, like taking an html class, thinkin i could build my own website, when really, all along, i should hv just been using wordpress.. :) thx,

Not for eternity :) At the moment it’s not possible to transfer to us, but we hope to have that ability in future. I just cannot tell you when that will be possible at this point.

Potentially you could, but it’s risky. My advice is, if you can still recover the domain at your old registrar, to try and get it back and stick with mapping for now, but hopefully we’ll be able to offer another option in future. I can restore the mapping upgrade you cancelled, so just let me know if I should do that.
Alternatively, I can still refund the mapping for you, so at least you’re not out of that payment.
