Expiring custom domain

    We have a custom domain atimetoexplore.com, which expires in May. We are happy to let this expire when our premium plan runs out, and return the site to a free plan at atimetoexplore.wordpress.com. Just want to check whether this will happen automatically when the plan runs out, or whether we need to do anything to make sure we don’t lose the content.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there
    If you do not renew your upgraded plan or domain, you will revert to the free plan and the domain will go away. The domain expiring means you may not be able to recover it ever again, so be sure that this is what you want to do.

    If you allow the domain to expire, what will happen is that every domain URL link to your content wherever it appears on the internet and in search engine will be broken. When clicked the broken links will produce a 404 page not found. It will take about 3 months for the content to be re-indexed by search engines under the underlying .wordpress.COM URLs.

    Additionally, someone else may purchase the domain URL. And, that is why allowing it to expire or canceling it is never recommenced unless you intend to archive or delete the underlying site.

    Hi –

    This upgrade is not set up with auto renew so it will expire unless you renew it manually via wordpress.com/me/purchases/ Please note that this upgrade will need renewed from the original account, which is not the one you’ve posted with here.

    Hi, thanks everyone, I haven’t been very clear.
    – I don’t care about never getting the domain again – it’s just a site we used for a travel blog.
    – I don’t care if someone else gets the url
    – I don’t care re broken links – unlikely anyone has ever linked to it
    – I don’t care if no-one can find it via search – this is actually better.

    But, I just want to make sure that the content will be safe and continue to be accessible at atimetoexplore.wordpress.com, if I just let the plan expire.

    Can someone please answer this specific question?

    Yes, your content will be safe. If the domain isn’t renewed, your site will revert back to its free WordPress.com address (atimetoexplore.wordpress.com) and you can access your content from there.
