expiring custom domain name
-
Hello WordPress,
My custom domaine name is about to expire. Will the default wordpress.com address still remain active and visible to the public?
Thank you in advance.

Hi Anne,
After your custom domain name expires, you can fully cancel it to remove it from your site — if you get in touch with us again through our contact form we can also help you with that step. That way, your visitors can keep using your default WordPress.com address with your site.
Please let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)

Thank you very much Rachel.
What a great title you have ;).
I would like to allow visitors to continue to use the default wordpress address. Is there something specific I must do or will this happen automatically if I let it expire?
Thanks

Hi Anne,
I really like my title, too! :)
Your site will automatically switch back to the default address after you domain expires, so you don’t need to do anything in particular for that.
The only thing you’ll need to do at that point is fully cancel the expired domain — we don’t automatically remove expired domains because it can be hard to recover them if the domain expired by accident. If you don’t fully cancel the expired domain, you’ll see a little pop-up message on your site telling you the expired domain is still linked to your site. That message will only show up to you at first (so visitors will be able to use your default address as usual), and you’ll have to chance to fully cancel it then, or you can get in touch at that point and we’ll remove it for you.
