Expiry of free wordpress.com domains?

  What is the expiry on free wordpress.com domains? There’s a domain I’d like but it is already registered – but the website pastorsprogress.wordpress.com looks like it was registered free on 29 Dec 2008 but has not been used at all since: do or can free sites expire if unused for some years?
