Hi there!
Could you tell us a bit more about when you noticed the message? What browser, which version & operating system you’re using?
It would be great if you could attach a screenshot of the console errors (you’ll get there by going to More tools > Developer Tools > Console). You can use an online tool for that (such as https://snipboard.io/) and paste the link into your reply.
Thanks! -
I’m getting the same error when I try to publish a new post. A reddish banner across the top of the page saying, “Publishing failed. Sorry, you are not allowed to assign the provided terms.”
Since I’m using the “free” version of WordPress I don’t seem to have an option for More tools > Developer Tools > Console. All I find are: Import, Export, and Delete Site.
Suggestions?

You’ll find the console under your browser, not WordPress: https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/advanced-browser-troubleshooting/#javascript-errors

Ah. Thank you.
In order to make sure I captured the correct message, I tried posting the page again. This time it seems to have worked.
the message is/was:
`bubbles: false

<get isTrusted()>: function isTrusted()
<prototype>: EventPrototype { composedPath: composedPath(), stopPropagation: stopPropagation(), stopImmediatePropagation: stopImmediatePropagation(), … }which makes me think it didn’t like the “featured image” option.

You are using Chrome as your browser, yes? There is an issue with the most recent version of that browser that is causing issues with our login session cookie, which can result in an error message similar to what you describe.
If you clear your Cookies, then log out (and back in) to your WordPress.com account, does that make the issue go away?
You can follow the steps here to clear your cookies in Chrome.

no. I’m using Firefox, I think I have the most recent version. I’m running it on Linux, don’t know as that would make a difference.
It was odd. I got the error 3 times. Then I submitted the query, and while trying to find the right tools option, I tried again. It worked. So… something transient?

This is most likely a cookie issue in Firefox as well – we’ve had a number of reports about this, and for most people logging out and back in fixes the issue. In this case it sounds like the browser cookie in your browser might just have refreshed on its own.
That said, if it happens again, please let us know.
