    Hi Brianna,

The export file should just download, so it should show up in your downloads folder or wherever you have your internet browser save downloaded files. In Chrome for a Mac, you could go to “Window” and “Downloads” and the file should be right at the top if it’s the last thing you downloaded. Let us know if you can’t find it or it’s not showing up or whatever.

    Hope this helps! :)

    Kind regards,
    Jason

    Hi,

It did not download in Chrome, and there was a message stating that it would arrive in my inbox as a file (maybe multiple) when I hit export. It is nowhere and still has not arrived in my inbox.

    Thanks!

Hmm… Is this for a wordpress.com site? I see that your link is to a self-hosted website but I was assuming that the export was for your wordpress.com site?

What happens when you do the following?

    1. Go to your WP Admin page.
    2. Select “tools” –> “export”
    3. Select the settings you want and click “download export file”

    Kind regards,
    Jason

    Hi Jason,

I’ve done this numerous times for my wordpress.com site. Yes, I’m moving it to a self-hosted website, hence, needing to export what I’ve already done on wordpress.com.

This is what I am told on screen when I export the file:

    Your export is being processed!
A download link will be sent to (email visible only to moderators and staff) when the export has finished.

Yet, nothing arrives in my inbox or is downloaded. The total size of my site is 2 GB. I have no idea if this is small or large for a typical export file.

Thanks. Any help would be appreciated. I’m stuck until I am able to import this file into my new site.

Ah! My fault! I overlooked that the file will be sent via e-mail if it’s larger.

This could be some kind of glitch so I’ll tag this topic for staff to look at, but in the meantime I would try the following if you haven’t already:

    1. Check spam, social, and other filters.
    2. Try a different e-mail address from a different e-mail provider.

    Hope this helps!

    Kind regards,
    Jason

Thanks Jason! I actually got an import file the last time I tried it!

However, now, my problem seems to be that the media (mostly images) aren’t importing when I go to do the upload. I’m getting error messages ‘failed to import’.

    Any ideas?

That, I can help with! (hopefully) :)

    See this doc:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

Note: This will ONLY export your posts, pages, comments, categories, and tags; uploads and images may need to be manually transferred to the new blog. The current version of the WordPress.org installation gives you the option to import uploaded files, but the blog you are importing from must be live and serving images properly in order for it to work. So, do not delete your blog until after media files have successfully been imported into the new blog.

If you are planning to export your content to another blog platform, it’s best to manually download and save your images from your WordPress.com Media Library to before trying to import/upload them into the new blog.

Here is some additional information on images. The export file does not contain your images. However, if your WordPress.com site is still live the images will be pulled from WordPress.com to your new host. With larger imports the media may be blocked by your new hosting.

What is ‘still live’ mean? My blog on wordpress.com is still all there but just not online right now because I’m pointing the domain to my new hosting company.

As long as your WordPress.com site is not set to private the images will be pulled. As your site is currently set to private the import is unable to get the images from your WordPress.com site and pull them into your new site.

You will want to set your site to public while making the import then you may set it back to private after the import is complete.

If you don’t want to set your site to public you will need to manually download your images as Jason suggested.
