Export/Import

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to export my contents so that I can create a hosted site on my own domain with another provider. The XML file is created successfully, but the import fails with errors indicating that the media cannot be pulled across. My new host support engineers are saying that WordPress.com is actively blocking the import request from my new installation.

Any ideas or solutions gratefully received

  • Hi there,

We do not specifically block import requests, so I’m not sure why they would be saying that. However, I do see that you have a rather large media library (~2GB) and anytime you are transferring that amount of data.

Instead of trying to export all your contents in one shot, if you return to gapdecadeblog.wordpress.com and create a new export file, instead of exporting all content, try to limit your export file to just a few months. The option appears on this page where you create your export: https://wordpress.com/settings/export/gapdecadeblog.wordpress.com

If you try to import a smaller subset of your content are you able to proceed? one thing to be aware of is that the import process will skip any content that is brought over already (to avoid duplicates) and only import content it sees is missing. You can safely re-run an import multiple times, which may also help to slowly bring over that amount of content.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
