Export-Import blog: categories lost, as well as widgets. Is that normal?

    Hi, I’m using wp.COM.

I opened a (new) test private blog to try some new stuff, themes (not to affect my mail blog). Exported everything from my “normal” blog, imported to a blank test blog and something is missing: categories, menus, links, widgets (they’re not in inactive widgets). However, tags are here, as well all the post and pages.

This is juse from the first impression. Is this a normal export-import behaviour? Thanks! ;)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Well, it’s normal to lose your widgets and custom menus. There are problems with the import right now, though, it must be said.

There are some issues with the export/import that appeared about a month ago, and it is something that has to be fixed in the core of wordpress, which means it is not something that wordpress.COM can fix. The developers have to fix it.

Contact staff and see if they can do anything about recovering your categories. The custom menu you will have to recreate. Links can be imported under tools > import and the second selection down is “blogroll” which will let you import your links. The other widget though you will have to recreate. With text widgets just open the widget in the first blog, copy the contents and then paste it into a text widget in the second blog.

Thanks! This is nuts: categories are not shown in Dashboard (admin), but they are shown on the blog, correctly! How come? ;)

I have to rebuilt custom menus? Since I had sub-menus, etc.

I also have to rebuilt widgets from the scratch?

Links are lost, too. I’ve checked everything now on my private test-blog.

@thesacredpath, I wrote the previous reply at the same time when you were writing. Thanks for your input.

I see I can import Blogroll, but where can I export blogroll then? From my “normal” blog I did: Tools – Export – All – into a file. Then uploaded the same file to a test-blog and Imported it. I’ve tried Import – Blogroll with the same file, no links were uploaded (I don’t see them in a control panel nor on the test blog.)

It’s not a problem to recreate anything, I just wanted to know in advance was something an import “feature” or not ;).

I just don’t get it for categories, I don’t see them in my control panel, but here they are, in the test-blog, linked with posts and shown in a sidebar. Loosing categories would kill me, as well as tags, I wouldn’t go through “recreating” them through all my posts. Menus and widgets are simple and fast.

During the import process, you will be asked for the URL of the other blog’s OPML file and it will be in this form.

    http://firstblog.wordpress.com/wp-links-opml.php

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/blogroll/import-export-links/

As far as the categories, log out of wordpress, clear your browser cache and cookies, restart your browser and then take another look.

The other thing is to wait for an hour or two to see if they show up. If not, contact staff with the details.

Thanks. Where do I get OPML file from? I have to export if first from my “normal” blog, right?

  • Unknown's avatar

No, during the import process you provide the URL of your other blog with the wp-links-opml.php on the end. WordPress will then go and get the links from that blog. You DO NOT have to export it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Done! Links can be imported just by giving a special URL to my “normal” blog. It’s working. It would be nice to know how to export links to an OPML file, but this works as well. Thanks a lot ;)

The do not give us that ability anymore.

Thank you very much for your help! ;)
