export is returning empty files

I’m trying to export a relatively large blog. The first export I did (of the whole blog) had lots of errors, as did the one I got from a WordPress helper. So instead I tried exporting it using the posts, pages, feedback function. The pages export worked PERFECTLY (and this was the most messed up in my original export/import), but all the others keep returning empty files in the wordpress export link.

What is going on? I’m on Windows 8.1, but it seems like it is a problem on the WordPress side of things since the files have started coming back as empty. . .

Really frustrating, especially since I wanted to do my fianl migration over the holiday weekend when subscribers in the USA are off having fun away from the computer! (I moved another blog earlier as a test, without a single problem, so wasn’t expecting such a massive failure on this one.)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Hmm, I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance. While you wait for their reply, which might take some time as it’s weekend, can you try a few alternatives which might just work?

    – Use a different browser
    – Try downloading via a proxy or proxy browser extension

Let me know if it works.

I’ve discovered I can transfer the posts by doing a few months at a time. It’s slow, but has the advantage of letting me see exactly where there are problems so I can fix them along the way.

What I do still need is a way to export my feedback data, since there is no way for me to break that file into smaller pieces. (It really shouldn’t be that big of a file, I don’t have loads of comments and likes.)

Hold on doing anything for a bit – I discovered a mess in 2013 that I want to clean up before I export the rest of it. The last thing I want to bring over is the feedback. I’ll send another note here when I’m ready to deal with those files.

  • Alright then, Staff would be able to email you the export file once you’re done with the clean up.

HELP!! I managed to reload all my pages and all my comments by doing a couple months at a time. I lost about 40 posts, but I also lost over 12,000 of my 19,000 pictures!! I can probably deal with the 40 posts, but the pictures are a problem. That isn’t manageable.

It’s not just old pictures, I lost lots and lots of pictures loaded just in the past year!! (For example, 1 of 187 photos from this Feb transferred, although all 14 posts did.)

    Help!!!

I lost almost all my categories too – again, mostly from more recent posts, but I can live with that if I can get my pictures back.

One last question/issue: for whatever reason WP.com has renamed a couple hundred photos as “Olympus camera” instead of the id they had when they were originally imported. (These were all imported from Blogger originally.) I’ve been trying to rename them by editing them through the posts they are attached to (the only realistic way to do this), but it doesn’t seem to be using the name change. What’s up with that?

  • I see my colleague is helping you via email. Please continue the conversation with him to keep everything in one place. Thanks.
