Export media (from WordPress.com to WordPress.org)

    Dear Support Team,

I have read many forums and tried to get the answer in other websites / online too but it has been weeks since I am trying to fix this problem and I simply can’t. Please help me!

My friends helped me moving my WordPress.com blog to a private domain on WordPress.org. All the posts are on place but about 20% of the media is missing, photographs of some of my posts. When I try to export media, I receive the “network error” message.

Thank you so much for your help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there!

I was able to download the content from https://wordpress.com/export/peculiarkind.wordpress.com. Please make sure you have tried from there.

“network error” error may also mean that it is an internet connection issue on your end. If it is not stable the download can be interrupted. I suggest trying using another network.

It is sad to see you leaving. Would you mind sharing with me why you’re canceling? We use feedback like yours to help improve our products. If there’s anything I can make better for you, I’d be happy.

    Hello, Darusja!

    Thank you for your reply!

I also have tried from there, and yes, you are right, it might be an issue of my network. Unfortunately, I can’t really try another one again right now (this is the second one I am trying from) and it will take some time until I can have access to a more stable one. Is there anything else I could do right now? I really want / need get my blog up and running again. It has been over 6 months since my last posts… It is so sad!

Can you send me the link on my email perhaps? You said you managed to download, right?

I am leaving simply because my older plan expired and I am unable to get a new one, due to the nature of my travels / life style, which is basically what I write about it on my blog. Friends of mine gave me this new private domain, which is actually great for me, so now I can keep on posting and uploading photos on my posts.

  • Hey there!

No problem – I’ve downloaded that and sent that in a separate email.

Are you able to confirm if you’ve received that?

    Many thanks!

Hey, Adam! Thanks for your help and support!

I received your e-mail but it came as an unsafe message. and the download is temporary blocked. I am not entire sure if it came with some malware or if it is simply because I don’t have you as my contact. But this never happened before. What should I do?

  • Hey there,

It looks like we’re slowly getting there.

I received your e-mail but it came as an unsafe message. and the download is temporary blocked. I am not entire sure if it came with some malware or if it is simply because I don’t have you as my contact. But this never happened before. What should I do?

There would be no malware with this file, so it could be that we’re not contacts.

Are you able to mark the email as safe or contact the email hosting provider so that they can unblock that?

    Many thanks!

    Hey, Adam!

I manage to unblock and download the file but once I tried to Import on my blog, I received this 2 error messages:

    1. Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at [no address given] to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

    2. Import WordPress

Sorry, there has been an error.
File is empty. Please upload something more substantial. This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini file or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini.

    What to do now?

  • Hey there,

    Thanks for reaching back out.

    Internal Server Error

…This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini file or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini.

These would errors related to the new hosting environment and the new hosting provider would be able to help with this.

It sounds like there’s some storage issues at play there, and they may need to adjust the package.

I hope this helps to point you in the right direction.

Sorry, I missed the last reply!

You are saying that now I need to contact WordPress.org to fix the issue? What about the fact that one of the error messages says that the file is empty? What if I need to download it again?

P.S.: I replied to your email but got no answer, so that’s why I am writing here again.

    Regards,
    Lei.

To export media from a WordPress.com site to a self-hosted WordPress you can visit this site

  • Hello Lei,

    Thanks for reaching back out!

You are saying that now I need to contact WordPress.org to fix the issue?

Not WordPress.org, but instead the new hosting provider. WordPress.org isn’t a service, it’s just where the free open source software can be downloaded.

You would need to reach out to the new hosting provider for help.

What about the fact that one of the error messages says that the file is empty?

I’ve checked the file, and it’s not empty (thankfully), so we can rule that out.

This would point to something on the new hosting environment. The message “This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini file or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini.” Would be the next avenue to pursue with the hosting provider.

There is a large amount of content to import here, and so the max upload file size, may need to be increased from the default (which is whatever they set).

    I hope this helps.
