export not getting all the posts
-
howdy folks,
i’m having an issue exporting my blog. it seems the export doesn’t get all of the posts. i’ve got about 600 posts (most with comments) over a period of two years. the resulting xml file contains the last post i made at the end of october ’07 and everything from march ’07 and prior… but it doesn’t include anything from the six months between march and october. have i hit a maximum post limit? the xml file is only 1.49MB and i’ve tried exporting three times with the same results.
thanks for any assistance,

There is no limit on the export file at all. I would maybe take a look at the last past that gets in there and find out what the next one is. Maybe there is something in that post that is stopping the export file from continuing on…

well, after doing some forum searching, found something that worked.
open up the xml file and delete all the posts that were successfully imported, then save the file and do another import. don’t worry about missing some when you delete, if the post is already there it’ll say ‘post already imported’ and not double-import it.
and for the record, this was a wordpress export going to a wordpress import. seems there might be a limit to the number of posts that can be imported at one time.

trent,
thanks for your response (didn’t see yours before posting mine). just to see what happens, i reimported the complete xml file. this time it quickly cycled through all 687 posts (responding ‘post already imported’ to each one).
unfortunately this seems to be something that a bunch of folks are having trouble with. one thing people may want to try is just importing a second time after the first one finishes. maybe it would rush through the ones already done and pick up where it left off?
thanks again for the response,

It is because of the size of the file that it has trouble before it runs out of resources to complete the file in the allotted time. From your original post you were talking about the “export” function not showing all the posts. That is not the case as they are there and this is an “import” problem. Glad you sorted it, but it was confusing reading it as I don’t know anyone with the “export” problems, but many with import problems :)
Recently, I moved a site over with an export file of 4.5 megs. I broke it up into 10 seperate files to get it imported properly. Time consuming, but all I could do. I am recommending an export function that pulls out “date related” posts to allow breaking up the size of the import. Nothing in works yet, but would be useful!
