Export problem

  • Unknown's avatar

When exporting from my blog at wordpress.com only posts from Jan 2006 backwards are exported. What can I do to have all my posts exported? Thank you in advance. Andreas

Have you sent in a feedback to staff requesting assistance?

Can you open up the *.xml file and see if your missing posts are in there anywhere please. I’m just wondering if they’re out of order or something.

You are the site admin for this blog, right?

Timethief, no, they asked here in the forums for assistance. That’s why we’re and the forums are here.

I’m having the same problem… I export and the farthest that it goes is like February of last year. I checked my own XML file and the posts are not in there either.

Sorry, I somehow forgot about this as I had a busy year and other things to do. The issue still exists. Yes, I’m the owner of the blog and I can open the .xml file. The missing data is not in the .xml file. Anybody a clue on how to solve this?

I had the same problem so here is the way I solved it. First of all, your generated .xml file it’s OK. There is not any problem with the export process, but you can check it by searching for your posts from 2007 with a text editor –or simply go straight to the bottom of the file, there should be your last post.

I guess the real problem is importing the .xml file so I tried two things. Unfortunately I tried both at the same time so I don’t know witch of them worked.

    1) Rename the xml extension to wxr. I suposse that this one is usseless, but I did it.

    2) Open de .xml (or .wxr) file with a text editor and delete all the posts before January 01, 2007 and save it with a new name.

Then you can import the new .xml (or .wxr) file to your new blog. Notice that I suposse that you have your posts earlier from 2007 imported to your new blog already.

Hope it can help you and my poor English hasn’t screw all the explanation.

@ agrabher: Maybe it’s the size of it? Delete the spam comments under Dashboard -> Comments -> Akismet and try and export it again.

I am having the same problem. I was trying to export my blog and it would only give me from Aug to September but NOTHING else. What’s wrong?

  • ohalamode: I just tested an export from your blog. The export file contains 292 posts. Your blog contains 292 posts.

What leads you to conclude that some articles are missing?

  • Unknown's avatar

because i am trying to move my blog to typepad and when I got to import it, it only gives me august and september.

  • ohalamode,

It sounds like the problem is at the Typepad end. All posts appear to be in your export file. If the Typepad tech folks find a problem with the file, they know where to reach us.

Ok so should I contact them about this issue

How do I change the format of the file that wordpress export from a xml to wxr format? help!

  • Unknown's avatar

If you used the “export” function in any wordpress installation with that capability (including this site) it is a WXR formatted file with a XML ending extension.

Well then how come it isn’t working for typepad? They are the ones that told me the file is giving them a “not found error” I am having the support team work on it but they need the file to be correct and it is not correct when I give them the export file.

Personally have never tried to import into Typepad, but maybe ask in their forums about importing wordpress.com or even do a search on google and see if anyone has had the issues that you are.

I really don’t understand why this is so difficult. Argh. :(

I wish I could help out more, but reading through some of those posts myself on their forums, it is just expecting the normal wordpress export file to import the posts and comments from. Have you exported another one and tried a new one?
