Export TAR file cannot be opened

3rd request for help (no response to prev 2 requests). After many tries, I was finally able to successfully Export Media but no program is able to open the TAR file. Most just say ‘cannot open’ or ‘invalid file’. WinZip provided ‘bad header’ info. HOW DO I EXPORT MY PHOTOS SUCCESSFULLY – WITH BEING ABLE TO VIEW THEM?

  • Hi there,

Someone replied to you yesterday via email explaining how to open that file.

To open a .tar file on Windows you need to download an application like 7-zip. this is explained in our Export documentation, here:

Multiple programs have been unable to open the TAR file. Most just say error or invalid file. WinZip included that the header is bad. The download apparently contains invalid code and cannot be opened by ANY unzip system (I’ve now tried at least 7 programs).

  • WinZip cannot open .tar files. You need to download the 7-zip app: https://www.7-zip.org/

If that app cannot open it, it means the download is corrupted, in which case you’ll need to get a new export.

WinZip DOES support TAR files now and was the only program that provided a reason for the file not opening (“bad header file”).

The TAR could not be opened with PZip (PeaZip), 7-Zip, zipeg, or several online programs.

  • In that case it means the download has been corrupted. Please start a new media export, and let us know if that doesn’t work either.
