Export tool is not generating the expected .XML
-
Hi guys. I have been using the Export function for a few years with no issue at all (do this for backup purposes). But on the last few days, using different browsers and operations systems (Chrome, Safari, IE, Mac OS X and Windows 7), I was not able to have the expected .XML.
What happens: a .XML is created with zero bytes :-S. As I said, I have already used the function before many times and I know that sometimes it takes a while to have the file generated. But now I don’t know what’s the problem… I’ve been trying for at least 5 days now, using different systems and browsers…
Thanks a lot.

Hi there, I’ve brought this to our developers, since I wasn’t able to generate an export file for you at my end either. I’ll keep you posted here.
-
Our developer was able to generate an export for you since your site is currently too large to use the self-serve tool. I will email you the link separately – please let me know when you’ve received it so we can delete the file from our end. Thanks!

Hello @kathrynwp , thanks. I have two follow-up questions, please:
1) I downloaded the file you sent me and it does seem to be right. My previous backup which I did from the export tool (March 2013) had 31MB. The file you sent me has 3.7MB… does this file has all of my content? Could you please check?
2) Why can’t the export tool works? Can’t it be reviewed? I don’t think my blog is THAT large compared to so many others… does the backup file has my Media Library?
Thanks a lot again.

The file is compressed in gz (gzip) format, which is why it’s smaller. If you uncompress it you’ll find that it becomes larger.

We do have a limit on export sizes to maintain the smooth operation of our servers. Sorry for any inconvenience.
does the backup file has my Media Library?
Export files don’t ever contain your actual media files, like images or PDF documents. Export files contain your posts and pages, which include links to your media files. A WordPress importer on another site can then automatically find and import your media files based on those links.

1) Sorry, but the file is 3.7 MB uncompressed! Compressed is 3.5 MB.
XML file: 3,721,618 bytes (3.7 MB on disk)2) OK, thanks.

XML file: 3,721,618 bytes (3.7 MB on disk)That’s odd – when I uncompressed the file I got a file that is 21.6 MB.
I will ask our developer to provide a link to the uncompressed file instead.
-
Thanks. Even 21.6 MB is odd, since my backup from March is more than 30 MB.
Thanks a lot!

@kathrynwp, thanks. I downloaded the file – 21,649,628 bytes (21.7 MB on disk).
I just didn’t understand why it’s 33% smaller than my backup from March – it should be even bigger… is this because of the tool that generated the XML? Thanks a million again.
-
Our developer looked into this and while he’s not sure what explains the file size difference, he did check the latest 21.7 MB file and it does look complete, so you should be good to go.
-
OK @kathrynwp, thanks a lot for the explanation and sometime in the near future I’ll be asking for a new .XML file for backup purposes.
Cheers!
