Export Tool, Slow connections.

    Hi wp engineering staff:

I’m having two problems with my blog:

1.- It’s been months since I could use the Export Tool. It doesn’t work at all. I need to make backups from time to time.

2.- Server and connections are really slower than a few months ago. I don’t get it. Any other web site loads much more quicker than auladefilosofia.net or its dashboard.

3.- Is my blog too big to be hosted in WordPress.com? Should I move to another host? I tried it a month ago but overnight they crippled my larged nested menu: something about max time 3000 or whatever. A tiny mistake on the server side means lots of hours of work lost.

    So, what’s your advice?

    Cheers.

    Hi there!

1.- It’s been months since I could use the Export Tool. It doesn’t work at all. I need to make backups from time to time.

I’m happy to send you an export link for your site. Unfortunately, once your site gets over a certain size many browsers have trouble doing the download, so we’ll have to manually zip your export and send you a download link.

2.- Server and connections are really slower than a few months ago. I don’t get it. Any other web site loads much more quicker than auladefilosofia.net or its dashboard.

I see that your menu is extensive. And you have a lot of widgets with a lot of content in them. Both of these things are going to slow down your site no matter where its hosted. You may want to try to cut down the number of widgets and menu items you’re using. This will help the load times for your site on both the front end and the back end.

3.- Is my blog too big to be hosted in WordPress.com? Should I move to another host?

Your site itself isn’t too big to be hosted here. But you’re site does require a lot of items to load on every single page. I understand wanting to make it easy for people to find your content, however at some point it becomes information overload.

I tried it a month ago but overnight they crippled my larged nested menu: something about max time 3000 or whatever. A tiny mistake on the server side means lots of hours of work lost.

I’m not sure what this means? You tried to move to another host a month ago and had issues with your menu? Or were these unrelated?

You may see better results moving your site to a new host, but you may see worse ones depending on that host’s server structure and their load limits per user. Let me know if you’d like me to send you an export download link. Please note that this export does not include your theme files or your menus.

    Hello shawna,

So, about the backups, I’ll ask you for a zip file from time to time. It would be great if you could send me a new one. My mail is (email visible only to moderators and staff)

About the widgets, I’ll cut them down. I’ll make a shorter menu. And I’ll use twenty fourteen as a theme. I hope all these changes make the blog and its dashboard load faster. I’ll tell you about it in a day or two.

once your site gets over a certain size many browsers have trouble doing the download,

Which is the best browser to do the backups?

    Thanks

    Cheers.

Great, that all sounds like it will help things move faster. :)

I’m not exactly sure. However, I think at this point given how many posts you have any browser would have trouble communicating with our servers to make the export happen.

I’ve sent you an email with a download link.
