Exported WordPress.com posts fail to import to self-hosted WP

  I’ve exported my posts from wordpress.com but the .xml file fails on import. I’ve tried it numerous times on two different installs using both just posts exported and everything exported.

  Both file sizes are very small (474kb & 532kb) and I’ve increased upload_max_filesize to 64M and post_max_size to 64M.

  I of course contacted my webhost first but they’d never seen the problem before on such a small file and when I tried it on an install on another host and it failed as well I assumed it must be the file.

  Any idea what the problem could be?

  Just an update to this, if I don’t choose “Download and import file attachments” then all posts are imported but not the media obviously.

  I would very much like to import the media as there are wordpress galleries in every post along with images.

  So just to clarify, I’d like to know if it’s possible to export the wordpress galleries that are included in these posts using the export function. It’ll be a lot of work to re-create these galleries from scratch.
