Export/Import fail
-
Hello!
I exported all the files from my wordpress.com and imported it to my own hosting site with wordpress.org. But finally most of the media wasn’t transferred, I don’t know why. I tried several times (cleared everything from the new site in advance), but the main photos of all the posts (the miniatures) were not there on the new site.
Could it be the mistake of the theme? I’m using the Revelar theme.
If you could give me some advice, I’d really appreciate it!
Thank you in advance! The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
When I check the WordPress.com site, I see featured images for these two posts:
«They don’t understand why I’d want to spend so long away from home». B&H Cyclus.
I also see the featured images for them on the new site:
http://www.rushawayblog.com/2017/04/28/beauty-and-harmony-of-the-world-the-cyclus/
However, when viewing the home page of the WordPress.com site, most of the posts there do not have featured images assigned:
https://rushaway.wordpress.com/
Could you provide links to a few posts from the WordPress.com site that have featured images present, along with matching links from the self-hosted site that are missing those same images?

Thank you for your response! You’re right, I had to put the featured images for these posts you’ve mentioned by myself. So originally none of the posts had them. For example these:
– From the wordpress:
https://rushaway.wordpress.com/2017/04/03/all-of-peru-day-9/
https://rushaway.wordpress.com/2017/03/31/best-free-walking-tours-in-south-america/
https://rushaway.wordpress.com/2017/03/27/all-of-peru-8/– From self-hostel site (respectively):
http://www.rushawayblog.com/2017/04/03/all-of-peru-day-9/
http://www.rushawayblog.com/2017/03/31/best-free-walking-tours-in-south-america/
http://www.rushawayblog.com/2017/03/27/all-of-peru-8/And all the earlier posts as well…

Thanks for the links.
Could you try exporting March and April’s media using the Media option here?
https://rushaway.wordpress.com/wp-admin/export.php?type=export
Then try importing that to the new site.
If that doesn’t work, check your new site’s media library to see what the maximum uploadable file size limit is. There should be an indicator of that size at the bottom of Media > Add New.
All of the images in the links you’ve provided are 4 MB each, but if your host doesn’t allow media that large to be uploaded, that could be why they didn’t import. The images in the featured posts I linked to are much smaller.

Thank you!
I’ve tried exporting March and April’s media and then importing it, but it didn’t help.
“Maximum upload file size: 128 MB.”, it’s said on my site. So I don’t think it could be because of the size of the images…
Although I just thought that the exported XML file of 2-month media is only 218 KB. Is it ok? It seems very little to contain all the necessary pictures. Can it be the issue?
What else can I try? Only uploading each picture manually to my new site to each post? -
Hi, if you could, let’s try one more thing. Given the images you uploaded in March mostly range from 1mb to as much as 9mb, can you try exporting just April and see what happens since it has far fewer images?
The other suggestion I have for the future is to Optimize your images before uploading them and try and keep the file size around 200k. I know the support page I referenced talks about much smaller image file sizes, and I’ve recommended less than 200k in the past, but the base speed of internet connections has increased and I’ve had little issue with 200k file sizes unless I have a lot of images in a single page or post.

Hi, thank you! Exporting and importing media monthly helped. Not all the images were transferred, but most of them. Apparently, it’s because of the big size of the images. Thank for the article, from now on I’ll definitely optimise the images for my posts :)
